ECM no power?

88 GTA engine and harness. Was running after installing. Set a year or so. No start now. Have a 89 firebird dash and wiring. Didn't turn over with key. So I hooked up remote trigger switch. Starts with fluid. So I have spark. Check fuel pressure. Good! Key in run position.seat belt light and sel. No vats light at all. No power to ECM/crank fuse. There is power to the pink/black wires. Question, where does the ECM/crank fuse get it's power supply from? The only shop manual I have is a 85 Camaro. Can the starter enable relay cause this problem? I don't think the ECM would have power If the fuse isn't getting any. Any leads would help

Re: ECM no power?

I have checked for injector pulse at the injectors. Keep in mind that I have had the car running after installing the engine and harness, ecm and dash.

Re: ECM no power?

89 wiring, does that mean this is a VATS car? If so, you can test if it's VATS getting in your way by bypassing the starter enable relay with a thick wire and 2 male spade connectors. If the car starts cranking, that relay wasn't getting activated (or that relay is no good) and VATS is what controls it. The other thing VATS does is disable the injectors so you might try installing a bypass module if the cranking test is successful and the relay isn't busted.

Re: ECM no power?

I will do that. But would that keep power from getting to the fuse box on the ECM/crank fuse. There is some power in the box

Re: ECM no power?

OK. The fuse I tested yesterday was the crank fuse. That has no power. The ECM fuse only has wiring on one side. That post has power with key on. The injector I have a test light on has no pulse when I turn it over remote. Have not tested at the ECM connectors for pulse.

I would try the VATS bypass and see what happens.

How and where do I get the module? I have not seen any info on where to get them. I will check out AutoZone.

Re: ECM no power?

I have never bought anything off eBay. I don't buy anything from internet. My wife has a few things from stores. How do you know which frequency if there was never a chip key? Or does it cover all frequency at one time

Re: ECM no power?

I think this product is likely too niche to be sold in stores, so you might need to make an online purchase. This is the manufacturer's website for the bypass module, I would consider it less safe than ebay to purchase from as it's not an https website and won't have ebay's purchase protections:

http://timers.shop/GM-VATS-Bypass-Mo...-LT1_p_33.html

These are the instructions for the device:

http://timers.shop/assets/documentat...***_Module.pdf

The module only outputs one frequency at a time, the instructions tell you how to control what it outputs. I believe my '89 needed the 30hz signal so I tied the blue wire into the ground and left the green disconnected. I used an alligator clip to temporarily connect the various wires until I found the combination that started the car.

Re: ECM no power?

The eBay hz modulator is a great value to bypass vats.
B6 at the ecm is the hz signal to enable injectors.

By the way. The car I got the dash out of. Was a 89 firebird with 5.0 tb. It was a running car with no chip in the key. I used the complete dash, harness and steering column.

Re: ECM no power?

Tpi 88-89 and tbi is b6 1227730 tpi and mpfi 3.1l is f10 for 90-92.
the letters on the chip will identify if from late 88 may contain vats.

Re: ECM no power?

A few years ago when I did the swap you identified the ECM and prom for early non vats 88 with 5.7 auto 3.27 gears. That is what I have. But the engine harness has the blue wire on,think it was pin 66? ECM prom engine and engine harness all came out of a 88 GTA running. He had already sold the dash harness. That's why I took my dash out and installed the 89. How much is a prom with vats tuned out

Sounds like your set with the prom you have if I identified no vats. You have verified accessory power and constant battery power at ecm ?

Power at fuse box. Have not tested at ECM yet. Last night I couldn't get a injector pulse at the number one cylinder injector. I had to use a jump wire on the starter enable relay

Re: ECM no power?

I'm sorry I'm so difficult. My ECM is 16198259 delco. The prom is akxz3294. The harness dose have a blue wire in the b6 pin. I will be checking for power at the b6 wire with key in run? Or crank

Re: ECM no power?

chip code akxz for 88 350tpi automatic.
was released on 05/19/87 and has vats enabled.
if you don’t have a passkey module and resistor probably won’t see a hz signal or 2.5v at ecm for vats.
i was referring to ecm constant power at pin b1 , c16 accessory power at a6.

Re: ECM no power?

The pass key box was in the dash out of the 89 when I installed it in the 88😂 all this because some previous owner had to take the engine and harness out for what ever reason. But heck! I only paid 700 delivered to my house. Had a boat anchor that wasn't hooked up yet in it too

Have power to pins b1 and c16 with key in run. Pin a6 has nothing. Key on or acc.

How does the ECM fuse work when wires only come out one leg of the fuse? I will re check a6 and follow it up to the 207. Where are the accessory fuse location. I didn't see it in the box. I will see what I can find out

Re: ECM no power?

Ok. I found the acc. Fuse. It's a big one. Wiggled it and my test light came on.. key in run. Didn't come on in acc setting. Rocky back instead of forward to start. No start and no pulse at injectors. I do have power at the ECM and fuse box. So do I start a new thread or what

Re: ECM no power?

I waited all this time for module to come in and has no instructions and the website says nothing about the module. I continued to look and there are alot of other people having the same trouble. If it's supposed to be so simple. Why no info on installing it. Help!😑

Re: ECM no power?

Tuneperf. Nothing says it plain and simple.. red wire goes to ignition? Ton of wires go up the column.. does this thing tie to the 2 white wire coming out of the column? Like the red to one and the white to the other and black to ground?

Re: ECM no power?

For anyone that has, or is planning to...

PLEASE do not contact me for GM Key-Codes and VATS Resistor Information, from the GM Database by your VIN.

GM CCA requires that a State DMV check, Drivers License, and Title/ Registration (That are all in your Name) be provided.

Thank you!

Re: ECM no power?

Takes me forever to read and understand what I have read. Always been slow. Any way. I'm suppose to go to the ECM connectors and plug it in there right? Do I cut the wires? Or tie it to them? 89 firebird 5.7tpi. sorta. Red wire on module to the a6 hot black/pink? Black wire on module to the a12 black ground. And white module wire to the f10?

Re: ECM no power?

Ecm ground or dash frame. Try grounding blue wire of module and try to start green might be ungrounded.

Re: ECM no power?

So I don't fry something, do I cut any of the wires? Or just splice into all of them.? B6 is the one I have mostly in mind

Re: ECM no power?

Splice wires b6 can be cut or spliced since passkey module is not operating.

Thank you very much! I'd rather ask questions and take my time than fry something.

Re: ECM no power?

Just a word of thanks to everyone who helped me deal with this challenge. Last week I got the module soldered in. Today I pumped 4 gallons of the seafoam gas mixture out of the tank and added 4 gallons of fresh 4.00 a gallon gas in the tank. 1 shot of starting fluid for fun of it and 2 turn's of the key later we have a running 88 formula with a 5.7 Tpi. I think this project has been in the works for over 7 years. Not ready for the road yet. Figure another month. Needs sub frame connectors and original drive shaft installed. Thanks again
