400 Oil Pan

What oil pan is everyone running when they swap a 400. I need a two piece rear main seal and the dipstick is on the other side of the factory motor. Also I have heard you need to run aftermarket headers for the dipstick to fit but I was wondering if stock manifolds and dipstick would work?

Thanks
Mike

Re: 400 Oil Pan

The first question has to be why you would consider a 400 but not headers? Those manifolds are a restriction even on a 305, and you're adding 33% more displacement. If you're not going to get headers, there's no sense in the 400. The oilpan for any mid-70s camaro will work fine.

Re: 400 Oil Pan

Is anyone running deep pans since I have one laying around. The pan is a 7 quart with a small kick out. Also I have heard early V8 thirdgens would work?

The reason I am using stock headers now is because I decided to go aluminum heads. I can upgrade to headers alot more easier than upgrading heads.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: 400 Oil Pan

if its two piece main and dipstick is on drivers side then you have alot of pan choices to pick from. Should beable to use any pan designed to fit an fbody with dipstick on driver side with 2pc rear main

two piece blocks with dipstick on passenger side are from 80-85 and there is less of an option there but i'm not sure where the location is on 400's.

Really? i thought passenger side dipsticks were in earlier years than that, the 350 I'm building now came out of a '77 silverado and has passenger side dipstick.

Re: 400 Oil Pan

'77 was driver side dipstick, thus that 350 isn't the original for that truck.

Then a pan from a 70 -79 Camaro would work? Clearance for the crossmember and exhaust would not be a problem?
