Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hey everyone, I was just looking through some of the engine swaps going on, and thought it would be cool to see some of the unique or different engines people are throwing into our thirdgens. I've seen mention of BBC, Pontiac, Mopar, Ford swaps and even some diesel.
That is for sure cool! I don't know if I'm some sort of freak, but I just love seeing people do things differently. Hope more people post their cars, or at least ones they've seen!
i am in the process of swaping in a 436 cubic inch small block chevy with a 400 th tranny, not i single one i found here has small block that big, just picked up my engine from dyno shop it made 605hp and 640 ft lbs of torque, should make a fun car.
Here is a picture of my big block swap. Its not a good one, i have better ones, just not on my computer yet haha It made 567 hp and 577 tq on the dyno last week. i have a different cam/intake/carb combo now. And there isnt tools in the engine bay anymore

Reason: forgot stuff
Back before i got into the 3rdgen fbodies i was a rx7 junkie ive had three of them and spent many hours playing with those motors.....congrats man that is kinda neat....i like it.....i regret that i did not try it before you.
Yea, well I know what I want, and I know what it's going to take to get there, although I might have wanted to bite some heads, it doesn't do any good. That and I was just being my calm peaceful self. The swap is coming together quite nicely now. I've only got a few things on the inside to clean up and organize, and I'll be about ready to head to the DMV and get the thing on the road. I wonder where I should take it first...a rotary meet, or a 3rd gen meet?

thx man its my dream engine too, when ur ready let me know maybe i can help u build a good one, this is third one i built, but last were just mild compared to this one.this one has eagle forged crank, mahle lightweight pistons forged, manley h beam rods,comp-cams custom grind, solid roller.rhs 210 racing heads poerted.this engine made max hp of 610 at 4500 rpms, and max torque of 630 at 2800 rpm.
wow man shes beautiful i love ur comaro its almost identicle to mine, except i have custom paint job,its blue and fades to plumb crazy purple at the bottom with gold flakes.
Im thinking about swapping in an ECOTECH 2.0 turbo engine into mine. After some weight reduction of course! LOL. I wonder how the car would be with that? On youtube, there is a guy with a second gen firebird with a 2JZ swapped. His is actually pretty nice.
These are awesome swaps! I love the different stuff. That rotary setup is wicked! And I really like the M90 on the LS1! Big block swaps are always cool, These cars deserved a big block from the factory. I've had the thought about the ecotec in these cars... can you imagine the room in the engine bay?!!! Those little engines can make some serious power (Saw one put together by GMPP that put out over 1500hp), and It would sure confuse people with that sound coming from a 80's muscle! I would love to see GM's new direct injected 3.6L V6 in one of our cars. Over 300 hp from the V6 with amazing fuel mileage. I've also thought about the Cadillac Northstar V8 (4.8L I think) I've heard those engine have big potential and they are to be found in just about every J/Y out there.

Thanks man, That custom paint job sounds really nice to! when I eventually paint my car I want to do the stock color but with pearlcoat that also makes it look like purple, green, etc at diffrent angles. Along with extra sparkle to the paint. Where your other engine builds 400 blocks also? Thats a extremely nice list of parts on your 436 to, very lucky man!

I personally wouldnt do it but it would be pretty sweet tho, son of a b*tch to do tho im willing to bet, maybe consider the 3.6 v6's in the caddys and new camaro's
2004 3500 V6 from a Malibu with a huge cam, P&P'd top end, hand built equal length longtubes, 45mm ITB's bolted to a '93 700R4 with a 3500 stall. OBD1 of course, '7730 ECM running $A1 mask BFUZ code for now. It should put down around 270 WHP after a few weeks of tuning next spring.

That is prob the sickest looking V6 ever put into a 3rd gen!!
it wouldn't be too hard, custom exhaust and motor mounts, a V6 transmission has a very similar bellhousing. N*'s are pretty light, and can make good power, although, they have a tendency to eat headgaskets. I'd follow the build if someone did it...

Not lighter than an aluminum-head, aluminum-water-pump SBC. And a stock 300-horse N*, not worth it. A max-effort, high-RPM version making at least 460 HP naturally aspirated, sure. Like an LT5-junior.
Start mocking up the swap with a common, cheaper 275-horse version while the 300-horse is on the engine stand getting disassembled for better parts. Then you can either resell the 275 or save it as spare parts in case you hurt the 300/460+

I've seen northstar's on a scale at under 320 pounds for a longblock. a turn key ZZ4 is 511 pounds... you're telling me a plastic intake and some accessories is going to add 200 pounds to a northstar?

Fail. You're comparing a bare LBA to a complete engine.
The ZZ4 already has an aluminum intake on it, and an iron water pump, and an iron oil pump, and a steel oilpan,
and steel valve covers, and a steel flexplate, and its one cam, and its spark plugs...
Your N* is still lacking ALL of that, plus needs 3 more cams.
And the production plastic intake manifold won't do the job, you'll need a custom-fabricated, short-runner, large-plenum
aluminum creation to make it scream.
Dress them both complete enough to fire, it evens out.
I didn't realize the turn key engine came with accessories, but again, are you going to add 200 pounds in accessories and a plastic intake? a ZZ4 intake to pan is still well over 370 pounds. then you can factor in that this thread isn't about smallblock Chevrolets, this is about unique engine swaps, and if you think even for a second that any smallblock is a unique swap...
Was here: Buick Grand National Swap....
But have changed to the LSX swap.. (not all that uncommon anymore)
427cid with single 98mm turbo/4L80E/3:25 gear/Fab 9 Trick Chassis Rear setup.
what id like to see is a skyline r33, r34 turbo engine swap(mostly cause i like skylines and cant get one in the us) and there only like $1000-$2000 on ebay

This would b awesome ... Or a twin turbo built 2JZ GTE
North Star would look cool. But my biggest concern is weight... The engine needs to either weight the same or lighter that my 3.1 and it has to be a v8
88 Supra turbo, bought as a shell, decided to swap in a sbc. It's still in progress, but that picture is old. It's all done, just having trouble getting it started.
