Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hi All, Newbie here seeking advice on an engine swap.
Long story short, I was just starting the process of swaping a carb'd L31 into a 93 Roadmaster (I know, not a third gen )....When all of sudden my wife tells me she is pregnant with my first child! Fortunatly I had already purchased the L31 long block along with a Edelbrock performer EPS, Ramjet cam, Holly 625 street demon, Proform 141-682 distributor, and a new timing cover (without crank sensor hole).
So my question is, can anyone tell me what parts from the 93 TBI I can swap onto the L31 to get this car on the road? I need to save as much $ as possible and I was hoping to use the TBI exhaust manifolds, beltdrive and accessories ect...
I'm answering because I owned a 94 LT1 wagon and adored every moment while I could as it rotted away, but we don't have all the info on b-body cars. Check a B body forum, I'm sure there's more info there.
You can probably use the fuel pump that's already in the car and buy a regulator to drop it down to 5-6 psi that the carb will want.
You can probably reuse the sensors for the dashboard, oil pressure and temp.
Those exhaust manifolds are going to kill power, but I don't know what is on the market for headers. Possibly nothing. LT1 exhaust is probably better suited if you find it. My stuff is long gone.
Fan relay and sensor for it needs to stay unless that was a mech fan.
Accessories will bolt up, Your balancer won't line up if the vortec has a reluctor wheel on it still.
Get a LT1 b body starter. Million times better than the previous one.
And then tune which is more work than it sounds.
Sounds like you're in for a long uphill battle, especially coming to us asking for simple things "like what do I need". Good luck to you, and congratulations Happy parenthood to you.
Thank you aliceempire, Just did a quick search and it looks like the the reluctor wheel servers a secondary purpose of putting pressure on the cam gears to help keep them aligned? Looks like I will need an L31 balancer.
The reluctor sandwiches between the balancer and the crank gear, which is butted up to the crank. Without the reluctor the proper lengthed balancer butts the crank gear up to the crank 'face, flange, whatever you want to call it'. You do not need and vortec balancer specifically if you take the reluctor off. The reluctor may not fit under the new timing cover anyway.
