Changing my exhaust...Longtubes?

My Hooker shorties just look like crap, they are now 6 years old and are really starting to be an eyesore on an otherwise sweet engine compartment.

I want to ditch my side exhaust too because it is just too loud, and I want to run an x pipe for more power and a cleaner sound.

I don't think my Hookers are really optimizing the horsepower of the motor either.

So I was thinking I'd go with a set of coated longtubes, then an x-pipe, then I'll use the same mufflers that are n the car now (Moroso Spiral Flows) and then run the pipes out the back.

This should give me the sound, power, and look I am going for.

SO, which longtubes should I get?

As far as I know, the only ones I CAN get for my vehicle are Hedman 1 5/8 longtubes or the Hooker 1 3/4 Super Comps.

Which one of the two is the easiest to install? In other words, which of the two will require the least amount of fabrication/parts changing on other parts of the vehicle besides the exhaust?

I don't want to spend tons of money on changing parts just to get these headers to work.

So which ones should I get?

well from everyone ive read there stories, its all differnt for everyone. some slipped right in, some took some kicking and screming.

im goin to be sellin the long tubes off of my car as soon as i pull them and send them to JetHot to get re-coated. probably let them go for $400 plus shipping, paid $600 new and only just over a yr old.

also one thing with the headmen long tubes is you have to use there S extentions to bring the exuast down to run it under the x-member. then its up too you.

with the hooker headers spark plug wise you might have to run a shorter plug if you have straight plug angle, if not no worry. starter, some people have gotta away with a stock starter, some had to use a mini starter. i got mine from Jegs for $155 shipped. other then that the hookers are easy to put in. i had mine in and bolted tight in about 4 hours. i also had to grind alittle bit away on my x-member to get one tube to clear.

theres a sticky i think about the hooker headers install that has tons of info.

id get the hooker long tubes if you goin to be goin for more power and eventually either upgrading parts on the motor or the motor itself. its really up too you and money wise really.

I have hedman longtubes. I like them and the install was much easier than when we put hooker LT's on my buddy's car. The hedmans are closer to the body, so you may gain alittle clearance there. The stock starter would fit too. Its really your choice, IMO they are both of high quality.

I'd also like to know the motor they are on as well as E.T's if you have any.

10.3:1 355 with dart iron eagle heads and hedman hedders longtubes. 11.84@116 with a powerglide and a 4.56 gear(28"tire). a th350 would put it into the LOW LOW 11's.

9.5:1 310 stock heads hedman longtubes 13.75@100.5 with 700r4 and 3.73's(28"tire) will get new times with 4.10's tomorrow

I was also looking into the Headman Longtubes and was wondering how much ground clearance their is compared to the Hookers at their lowest point.

I have them and I went from running a 15.10 to a 14.70 with nothing besides the headers. I put them on my 85 LB9.

lowest point using hedma x-tensions off the collector. this is a v8 car with v6 springs a and 215/65/15 tire up front.

i jsut bought the hedmans, my set was a piece o sh**, the drivers side header, needed a bunch of grinding on the crossmember, jsut rounding hte corners, fit right in from underneath, the passenger side, , had to take the starter off, pry the motor up an inch or two, set it in, fit pretty good, my starters woudnt work, have to run a mini, its jsut tooo close, and hten one more reason to diss hedmans, 3 of my bolt holes didnt evne line up,lol, they are out by jsut a haiur if u tightene it in it would wreck the threads on the head, so i jsut left them 3 off, kuse my motor is ocming back out, im sitll waiting on my mini starter so i havent got to test it out to see if i gained anyhting over a 1 1/2 shorty header..... so i dunno, i guessu get what u pay for ..really small collector on it, nor sure how good for power that is! but u can t go wrong on these headers for a guy wnating to get rid of the manifolds in search of more power for cheap!

small collector on it....??? that's a 3 inch collector there. and with any headers there's grinding on the crossmember, although if you had new motor mounts it would probably be even less of an issue.

running a stock starter on mine with NO problems. these headers are by far the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

I too am running a stock starter and have to agree on the bang for the buck as well. I have had zero problem out of mine on the install or anything else. I also oddly enough did not have to jack up my motor to get either of them in.

Build an extension into it when you do the rest of the exhaust then.

yep, your one step ahead of me!, doesnt a long collector increase bottom end power? or is it the short collector that helps out down low? kuse i have heard mixed opinions about this, but its supposted to affect when the power is made, the collector length!
