My long tube Ypipe
Well I've been watching guys fumble thru Y pipe builds for a looong time. Its time for me to man up and post what I did to my car back 15yrs or so ago 4 my hooker super comps to work the way I wanted them to.
The Y pipe i built was a test part that is now a tad rusty. I was going to redo it in stainless a yr or so after i built it buuuut that hasn't happend .... yet.
In these pix the car is on my lift, motor is out and the trans and Ypipe is hanging down quite a bit.. Oh the car was undercoated waaay b4 I got it and I have never cleaned it off..
Basicly I sectioned the framerails to tuck them closer to the floor pan. I also did some simple pie cuts to the factory trans crossmember to hang the trans back down to where the factory had it while each side bends up to the org factory bolt holes. I also hacked off the stupid 3bolt flanges and made the pipes slip fit with 3" wide stainless band clamps.. never change those junk collector gaskets!
Like I said i did it 15 yrs ago I have put many miles on this setup and its been perfect with no problems...

The welds REALLY suck, it was a weekend and was out of gas.. glad it was only supposed to be a pattern for a month or so.. lol

Re: My long tube Ypipe
much better
not too shabby for something you put together over a weekend with no argon that was meant to be just a pattern. i've built similiar setups and they work very well. i have a tendancy to do something with the crossmember such that i can tuck the pipes up a bit better. looks like you haven't hit too much with it though.

Re: My long tube Ypipe
I will TIG the stainless Ypipe when I get to it. Not bad 4 scrap pipe and a poopy welder.. ha..
And who knew that when your trans blows its guts out of the top, the lube softens undercoating so you can almost wipe it off with a rag and minimal scrubbing. I'll get all that nasty undercoating cleaned off some day..
