Carbon Z28 Grille
Just got my Z28 grille yesterday, and started looking at it. It would be so simple to make a mold off of it. Think I may find an old used one and try pulling a mold off of it. Would anyone dig it or would it look lame. It would be made of prepreg carbon as well no like the china made carbon parts.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
I want to do the same, my state requires a front plate, I want to set the plate back inside the opening. I will have to look at the laws but the plate has to be within 3-6"(??) from the front/rear of the vehicle.
^^^
this is because I have to have a annual inspection by some Idiot that really does not know the laws.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
I actually wanted to do this with a Z28 grill whenever I get one ordered..except I was going to wrap it in 3M di-noc and then put a few coats of clear over it to darken up the weave and make it shine a bit more.
I've got a strip of di-noc underneath the grill, on my front gfx covering up some scratches/damage and I get compliments about it all the time.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
I have it at work right now, but with all the stuff we have had going on at work. I have had no time to work on it. The only thing i have done to it is cut out returns for it, but it should be no problem to pull a mold off of it. May try to start back on it this week.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
Update should have the mold done by the end of next week at the latest. Might even have the first cooked cook by the end of next week. Thinking of cutting the bow tie out, and getting the machine shop at work to make a billet one to put in its place. I think that would look awesome with it brushed as well.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
i'd dig it butttttttt it depends on the color of your car and what other mods you have on it...
got a pic of your car?
ohhh..... you put a T56 on your 3rd gen? nice..
do you have any documentation about that?
maybe a parts list?
totally off topic though sorry...

No, I don't have a parts list. I think there is a parts list for the swap in the tech articles. And my car is white and with blue pin stripes. Also thinking of making some carbon mirror covers to go with it. Also a pic of the car.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
Here are some pics of the mold after I pulled it off. Came out pretty well only had one corner bit to break off, but I have already fix it. Have a little more work to do to it to get some of the shape back into it. That will only take a few hours to do. Then all that will be left to do is release it and pull a part. Some the pics are while it was in the oven post curing.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
where are you sourcing your carbon fiber materials ?
i'm trying to find an affordable and reliable source of larger quantities.. most of the stuff i find a 4" x 4" or 36 X 4 and stupid / unusable quantities...

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
subscribed, can you post a pic of the grille type you are planning to repo in CF? I'd be interested for sure, I'm not quite sold on how the billet grills look, a little too bling for me, but I don't want another vinyl(or w/e it is) one that will just fall apart again either.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
I have no Camaro, but that is truly excellent work, looks like you really know how to handle the weave so as to not disturb it while laying up the part!
I would be down for other parts if you decided to make parts that would work on a Firebird too

WOW! Didn't think there would be this much enthusiasm. This particular one is out of prepreg that is why the weave looks so good. Not bad for scrap laying around and an oven cure. I'll put together some prices for a wet lay one and get back to you by the end of the weekend.

I'm in. I would love to have one. Let us know when we can order them and pricing.
P.S. That's pretty cool that you've been working on the Deltawing. I hear that it's actually going to compete in the 24 hour of Le Mans?

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
Any plans for making one with the slats on it? Those old urethane or w/e they are grill pieces tend to fall apart after 20 years and I wouldn't mind having one that wouldn't.

Re: Carbon Z28 Grille
OK after looking for material, resin, and other various supplies. The price for them in a wet lay up is going to be about 200.00 each. They will be in a satin finish and will have a two to three week lead time for each part. Since they will be made to order. They will a 2x2 3k fiber 100% carbon no fiberglass. And not made with cheap foreign carbon. Wont yellow like you get with ebay carbon parts made in china. Will last for years.
