proper gas tank to replace or not to replace
I have a gas tank from an 88 Firebird 305 TPI that I'm trying to decide if it would be better to replace the tank or buy a good cleaning agent and get the rust out and coat the inside of the tank.
Need some opinions on who has done the coating on the inside of the tank and if its worth it. Or if I were to order a new tank, which one in the aftermarket has the proper baffling inside such as the plastic tray and the baffles with the holes made into the bottom of the tank.

Not sure an 88 TPI tank would have the best baffling anyway. Might be better to find a MPFI/TPI tank from a 91-92, as long as you stay away from TBI tanks all the later tanks have the 1LE baffling. Add the LONG late TPI fuel filter sock and you've Unlocked Achievement : Mythical 1LE Fuel Tank status.

My tank has the plastic tray and the metal baffling with holes drilled into them to let fuel pass thru but not slosh around. Ill have to take a picture of it next time I have a chance. Tank has not been out of the car since someone did the classic mod of the fuel pump removal from inside the car. Just curious what makes the 91-92 better?

If you get a new tank, the summit branded ones are a pretty good deal. and they have the baffles. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-255014 And my gas cap off my 92 fit it without any issues. Ive heard there is a common issue with the caps not fitting different tanks.

There was a lot of issues I read on some of the tanks where the filler neck was not lining up with the gas door slot and some even had to heat the neck up to bend it in place to be able to fit right.

Re: proper gas tank to replace or not to replace
I feel this pain. I'm getting ready to put a new fuel tank in my 90 Formula or I'm going to remove it and have it fixed. Haven't decided yet and I have no idea which tank to buy from all the horror stories on here with aftermarket tanks. When you grab ahold of the filler neck, it will move up and down, side to side A LOT and you can hear it hitting the bottom of the tank while you move it (I guess it's the neck hitting the tank). I only run 6 gallons in at a time right now since I don't drive it much. The PO was clueless and actually jammed a rag in there to wedge the neck thinking that would stop it from leaking. The fuel gauge doesn't work either. For a low mile car, it's pretty sad!

Nothing, if your car came with the later style baffled tank. I'm not sure when the "1LE tank" started showing up in regular TPI cars, 88 would strike me as being dangerously early to assume it's the later style. The Parts Catalog shows the "1LE tank" standard in 1990+. I know for sure that all the later tpi and V6 cars came with the "1LE tank". Given how common the 3.1 cars are in the junkyard, they'd be an easy one to keep an eye out for.
There are pics posted of inside the later tanks, compare your tank with those pics and you should be able to see if they're the same.

Re: proper gas tank to replace or not to replace
My 1989 had the gas tank pin hole problem. and was not included in the recall. It should have been included the recall. I replaced it many years ago with the GM replacement tank, with the deeper baffle. No more starvation.
I did drop the rear end to get the tank in / out.
