Dash Board Idea
Dash Board Idea
Alright so i accidentally kneed the corner of my perfect dash one day n busted the crud out of it. So I thought of this idea.
Remove the dash and cover it in plastic. Heat the plastic so it makes a good fit. Than cover it in a couple layers of fiberglass. Once it dries cut it in half, then remove the dash pad and fiberglass the seam back together. So now I have a hollow dash pad. Then drill a series of holes and spray some Great Stuff insulating foam to fill it. Maybe do some Chevrolet bowties for the front speakers. But then once it is all done up. Throw a layer of carbon fiber on top of it to give it a nice finish.
I'm down for all ideas, suggestions, and opinions.

The two things that I am wondering is if i can lay the carbon fiber down right on top of the fiberglass just like another layer. And if I can use the normal fiberglass resin or if I need to get a special one

Check this out: www.vfnfiberglass.com They make a dash pad for our cars in fiberglass! It's hollow and would give you a great start to your project!

I think you'd end up ahead of the game in cost, time and appearance by finding a very good condition original dash pad to replace it with. Whatever you build yourself will likely fall short of the quality and look of the original part or take you an absurd amount of time to perfect it.

Theres no doubt it would be a lot of work! Thats why I like the idea of getting vfn fiberglass's dash pad and then having it leather wrapped with a double-stitch at the leading edge. I live in AZ where the extreme heat and solar radiation will kill a new dash pad in just a few years. (Imagine getting sunburned badly, in the middle of december! It can happen! LOL)

Some shops specialize in fixing broken interior parts, cigarette burns, that kind of thing. You might want to shop around to see if you can find some place that does that kind of work in your area. Ask the detailing/clean up department at car dealers, or other auto detailing businesses who they use. You might be able to have the damage fixed to look really close to original for less then the materials for what you're suggesting would cost.
