1985 Camaro Headliner Removal/Installation

What's the easiest way to remove the headliner and replace it without damaging the retainer clips on the molding strips???

I wouldn't worry about the easy to find clips. I would worry about the headliner crumbling/cracking/breaking into bits.
They are quite fragile! Unless your talkin' about a newer plastic mousefur covered replacements?

I was thinking about removing the cloth and just painting the board black. You said the board is fragile so I will probably have to replace it.

But what would u replace it with?
NOS replacement boards or good used are scarce not to mention shipping charges.
Lots of homemade repair posts here so a search is in order so u know what your in for!

I've seen a few replacement headliners on ebay and at rock auto. if I can salvage the board I'll just paint it. I parked the car in the sun at a car show and the damn 33 year old glue let go, so now I have a large subwoofer magnet holding up the cloth. LOL Classic Industries.com has uncovered headliners 1982-92 for $150.00 P/N AFH19 I could also use plexy glass or lexan which would be much less $$$.

Yea you can get a repop bare headliner "board" of for a few bucks more a plastic mousefur covered one.
You prob. could sell it and make back a few bucks. Shipping will be a issue tho.
I'm suprised the "purists" ain't commented yet and rag about the replacement units!

Can't you just get under the sagging fabric and use adhesive and reglue it ?

I just had to do that to a Cadillac I bought in Fla. and brought it back to NY.

Started at the center and worked my way out each side.

I sprayed it with headliner glue and rolled it with a small paint roller, but it didn't hold. The prices they are charging for a replacement are astronomical!!! $190 The FED say's there's no inflation???? Obviously they never had to purchase auto parts...

Kydex is a moldable thermoplastic available in many different colors and textures.

Your right the old headliner just disintegrates when you touch it. Anyone planning on removing one should put on a dust mask and eye protection first. You will end up with pieces and dust all inside the vehicle from the removal process. Old Headliners SUCK!!!!

Cries of "BAN HIM" from the OE purists for posting something negative about OE headliner repairs!
