My ashtray use to have a nice smooth opening when pressing the button; but after doing some work under the console, it no longer opens unless I press the button and push on the back at the same time. Did a spring fall out? I was told the 92 had a gear type opening? Any pictures/help would be appreciated.

Your spring has sprung.

It's an easy fix, but more than likely the spring broke/snapped.

 

Gear mechanism? Is this supposed to open smoothly / slowly? Mine just springs / flips open, slamming open with a cheap plastic rattle / thud. I'd love to think it originally worked in a somewhat more refined manner.

 

There's a little gear drive that opens the lid smoothly.

Mine stopped working a few years ago. Ended up that the little armature on the door broke off.

 

I’ve replaced several firebird ashtray lids.The hardest part is getting the spring back in place.

 

Do you have a picture of the other side that shows the spring location?

Not on my phone but I can take one tomorrow, I have four shift plates on the shelf.

 

Just tried the one on my "spare" console today. Works in the same manner as the one in the car unfortunately.
