Re: Ohio?

Well, made a trip down to Marysville today in the bird to pick up a set of 083 heads. Excellent trip! About a 2 hour drive one way, but it was pretty exciting both ways. Not even a mile out of Norwalk, I passed a 91-92 bird, in rough shape, but great to see nonetheless. Gave the driver a little wave. Cruising through Marion, a guy walking on the sidewalk waved to me, made me feel pretty good lol. Also saw a GTA for sale along the way, excellent condition, but no price posted. Saw 3 thirdgen Camaros along the way, all parked. 1 Berlinetta, 1 Z28, 1 Iroc. Picked up the heads, talked to the guy a bit. Of course, where I picked them up at, he had a 357 sbc with a blower sitting on the stand, looked absolutely amazing. On the way back at a stoplight, some girl in the passenger seat of a Honda gave me weird look, so naturally I launched the car from the light. And to finish out the trip, I came home a different way, and passed a house with the garage door open, with a thirdgen Firebird sitting in his garage. Either a Base or a Formula. Can't believe how many thirdgens I saw out today. Made me proud!

According to this, there aren't any Friday's at Quaker for the rest of the year, just a heads up.

Re: Ohio?

I tried Cleveland cl first, but out of 3 ads, only got 1 response, which was too late. One guy had a set of fuelie heads on an l98, and a guy with Mercruiser heads didn't respond. I'm happy though, I talked this guy down to $200 from $300, for a brand new rebuilt set. Machine work done by Jegs. What are 113s from?

Oh, aluminum Vette heads. I thought about it, but I'm just going with a budget build for now. If I really get crazy after this year, I'll just pick up a set of AFRs.

To each their own I guess. To me what you are doing is like hopping up a pit bike, instead of just buying a dirt bike.

I was thinking about heading to thompson on saturday instead. I think i'm out of the game now though. I did a massive burnout for my son on the way home, and I think I blew apart the side of my radiator. I have a spare radiator, just don't know if i'll be able to get it in by friday/saturday.

To every person is his own passion.

Watch the whole video and you can't tell me that these lil engines arent fun to build. Because Ill tell ya they definitly are fun as crap. Mainly the turbo part thats whats so amazing to me that I cant wrap my head arround still.

If I wanted the fastest car I know Id never want a V6 or any TPI's most have anyways and call them a waste of money compared to the LSX family. But I wouldnt say that because I know the feeling of wanting to build up a engine of whatever caliber it is. Weather its a V6 or a V8.

dude i just did like 2 radiator swaps today one in a paying customers RS
i also installed motor mounts installed a tpi and every thing else on the top of the engine ie had the intake off for the cam swap also installed the radiator ac condenser installed a ypipe cat install dizzy set timing once i was done with the iroc

i had a paying customer that had me install a radiator and thermostat front wheel bearings rotors rebuild both front calipers new pads then did rear shocks
then i cleaned the garage

so if i can do all that in one day im pretty sure you can handle a radiator swap in less then an hour and that would include the time to run to the store and pick it up and the 2-3 gallons of coolent you will need if you need a radiator to borrow come get one

And to boot I didnt know what I was doing on this build from last winterat all... But this winter I know much more so well see what I can accomplish this time arround.

And sometimes I dont think ppl understand what a task it can be to drop a V8 into a V6 car and have it a normal reliable street car. But your right to each guy to his own passion.

btw i also dropped 1 k into the engine and removed 4 sec from the car atlest if you ignore the middle 305 i ran but stock l03 ran 17.1 im now down to 13.3 500 for the tpi 500 for zz3 80 for headers used parts are the way to go

I know bud, your one of the few that can do that and not blow a ton of cash. You and I both know ppl that dump so much $$ into there car thinking that the more they pour into it the faster it will go not understanding that the amount of $$ doesnt really matter for over all performance. But also im a do it yourself cheepskate..LOL

I never got to see you at the track when i was making those mid/low 13's sec passes??? I wanted to race ya man?

I edited that post and put a different vid up there of some other thirdgens V6s, but still including mine.

Checked the radiator earlier and it is indeed toast. I would swap to the SR and 24# injectors before having anybody mess with the tune for you.

We'll see how motivated I get. I have to flush the spare radiator I have before I can swap it in. It came from the 87 TA I used to have and has been sitting for about 11 years. Man I miss that car. It had the 305 carb, 700r4, open 2.73 and still went 16.63 all day long at thompson.

That's great! My car started out as a carburetor LG4 and here are a few things I have done:
Spent $99 for a Crane cam and lifters
an Edlebrock RPM Air-Gap for free
a "Cosmetic Reject" brand new dist and coil for $200
a brand new Holley carb for $350.
Used a SLP Tri-Y headers and ca back set-up that was on my old formula. After selling car and kept the motor I'd say the net cost of the exhaust is $150.

Best run is a 14.74.

I got the distributor at the US Nationals in Indy. The Mallory vendor trailer was there and they had some specials. The races is a good area to pick up deals on new parts.

I need help to pull my engine this sat or early on sunday. The main issue is that i do not have a cherry picker, I have a engine stand. But no way to get the engine out. I wanted to use a nice chain hoist but just my luck my grage has nowhere to do the rigging for the hoist. If anyone has a cherry picker I coudld borrow for one day, i would pay a deposit, and pick it up. Thanks.

fast strip the engine down to the shortblock ( i.e no heads intake accesorys etc)
get urself a 4x4 and 2-3 friends over loop a chain around the 4x4 and bolt it to the head bolt holes on the engine or the sides of the block were there are holes and u guys can pick up on the 4x4 to lift the engine out

the v6 shortblock is lite i can lift one up myself off the floor and set it on a workbench , 2-3 guys should have no problem lifting it out of the car with the 4x4 and chain

Re: Ohio?

when u tear the engine down , u have to keep everything together.
i.e rod/rod cap/bearings/pistion labeled so u know what hole it came out of

same with the main caps stamp them with a number punch or mark them otherwise to there location and direction on the block, if u mix up the main caps the block is no longer good without a line bore

same thing with the cam, the cam and lifters must be marked so that when reinstalled in the same engine or a new engine that the matching lifter from each cam lobe has to be put back in the same place or u will wipe out the cam

btw check out the 272 cam oil pan has for sale , brand new with lifters for 90bucks

Ok dave, is it sorta easy to get the engien out with the tranny still on it or is it "easier to just take it off first"

I did see his 272 for sale, That 300$$ turbo was my limit for the next week or so, but if he still has her in a few weeks its sold then. Thats basically a 272 delta grind right?

remove hood then distributor then the trans, then unhook the harness/ground straps on the back of the heads, then attach chain to engine and cherry picker then undue motor mounts and lift engine out.

u can pull the engine/trans together but u need to have the car jacked up pretty high so the trans and engine can go on enough of an angle to come out.

yeah the crane 272 is basically the delta cam

Why not? I will see what I can do, but if the weather gets by early enough tomorrow for 42 to open, I am probably going.

I'm basically to the point that I just need to remove the trans and then the engine....where is the main harness on my car for the ecu?

yup just inplug the connectors formt he ecm remove the passengerside kickpanel and u will see a bug square conector in the side panel the whole harness gets poushed out threw there and upinto the fender.

removing the harness with the engine will require u to unbolt the bulkhead connector by the brake booster and spliting the harness in 2

the left connector is for the gauges and starter/alt etc and is tied into the engine harness, the conector on the right is the light harness for the headlights and some other stuff, that side of the connector can stay in the car

its easier to leave the harness in the car when pulling the engine , just unplug all the sensors and ground straps and leave the harnes sin the car when u pull the engine

Re: Ohio?

Ok dave thanks again. The engine is about bare as of now just a block and trans on it. I got to clean up some of the wires and undo the turbo oil lines that are ziped down everwhere but I AM excited to get the engine out tommorow and look it over.

This is just the process that I wanted to do anyways this winter. Because that engine bay literly needs a clean out, I cant stand a messy engine bay. And I really want 12's right out of the gate next year. I got a little side bet with a friend(ford guy) that I can make a 12.99 pass on the first time out. Oh how I love putting some of those V8's to shame. ****..man Im going for 12.00, go big or go home..lmao

No garage sale just the usual fall/winter tear down..lmao But that turbo and intercooler I have is for sale..lol If I cant sell them then they will make nice orderments on the christmas tree.

Big day tommorow, that engine bay will be cleared out for the first time in its life. Cant wait to take that engine out and really see that block up close.

Just another reason I love V6's... all that dammm room!!!

Re: Ohio?

Well, the good news is i have a time. 13.5@98.7 mph. Bad news is, i will not return to or recommend thompson drag strip, up by mentor. I got 1 run, and then got jerked around for the next 5 hours and then "too bad, we're done for the night.". Never seen such a poorly run ghetto track in all my last life. I think i'll just stick to dragway 42, where at least i get a minimal amount of respect.

wow sounds like my old home track on saturdays, pay 50 bucks for time trails, and make 1 run then wait around for a few hours to be told there is no time to run again

Yeah that was complete bullshit last night. Looks like it's 42 or Quaker for us from now on. I will never go back to thompson again. It's sad how they can have a nice track, and such *******s running it. Atleast you put up that good time. Funny that your car was faster then 10-15 "race cars". LOL

Yeah, what a bunch of garbage people/cars. There were some nice ones, but I've never been to a track and seen so much rusty junk as I did there. I guess that's what you get halfway between slums like youngstown and cleveland though. I haven't run Quaker, but I know I like 42 and always have. If I can recover from this weekend financially soon, we'll go out and run some more before the season is over.

Thanks Mark. Yeah, it impressed me and it definitely has more in it with some slicks and refinement of my technique.

Re: Ohio?

i would have figured the 3.42 gears would have put your mph higher
when i had an almost identical run i went 101 with 3.23s

one day will have to compare a little more what we did to the cars

i did this run with the 305 computer lol but the posi is going out

Re: Ohio?

Click on the link in my siggy for my cardomain, all my mods are listed.
As I said though, I only got one run, which means I need to work on my technique and make some adjustments. I can almost guarantee my timing was being pulled 5 degrees the whole way down the track too, which will get fixed soon.

Re: Ohio?

Your guys speed(MPH) is probly different just becasue of the mods, tune, and what the car likes. I will say that 60 ft is impressive off stock tires and only one time trial at it.

Bud with you making a pass like that with one shot..... you have many much better times ahead of you im sure of that. Technique and some slicks...and you'll be making some even more impressive times.

Did I show you guys this yet... depressing weekend here.

Ringland and ring is cracked.

Good thing is I have time to do this now.. deshrouding the valves and working the chambers. At least this is free and not killing me like the other pic above..lol

Yeah, once I get the new tune emailed to me, I might come look you up, if you'd be so kind as to burn it for me. That will probably get me to low 13's right there, if it is doing what I suspect it is. Yeah, the tires are just Riken Raptor ZR's with 22K miles on them and at the wear bars on the rears, some better ones or slicks will probably cut yet another 1/10 or 2 off. I fully see a 13.0 possible with some adjustments and learning, maybe even better.
