HELP I need a helmet and FAST!
I'm going Racing at Raceway Park in NJ on sat, and I want to purchase a new helmet for that ASAP
I need something that will pass tech. This needs to be a helmet i can use if I ever auto x, road race, etc.
My car is far from heavily modified, so I just need something that will get the job done, not a $1,000 helmet.
What specifications does the helmet need to meet?
I prefer full face over open face (the full face just looks cooler to me!). But, the last time I wore a helmet, I had to slouch the driver's seat cuz my head kept hitting the top of the car.
From what I saw, there were only 2 full face helmets at SummitRacing for under $200 dollars. Does this sound right?
This is the one I thought looked cooler.

I have no clue if this meets my needs.
I tried surfing jegs, but i dont like the way their search thinger is set up.
Thanks!
Bill

Re: HELP I need a helmet and FAST!
You don't need to buy an expensive SA rated helmet to pass tech. Go to your local motorcycle shop and find one you like. Just make sure it has a Snell rating decal on the inside. The Snell 2005 rated helmets should be in all the bike shops by now. You only need a M2005 to pass tech. For what you're doing, an SA helmet isn't required unless you want to pay the higher price. If it doesn't have a Snell rating, it won't pass tech.
For 2007 the IHRA minimum spec is a Snell 95 rating. NHRA won't accept the 95 this year so the NHRA minimum spec is Snell 2000. IHRA will probably change next year.

Re: HELP I need a helmet and FAST!
Thanks for your help guys! I got a snell helmet today, and it cost me $140 at the bike shop. OUCH
The guy said the snell rating wouldn't be enough for a road race course, but should be enough for drag racing. I guess I'll need to rent if I feel like auto-xing.
I ran to the vinyl shop and had some custom lettering printed. Then I peeled of the lame "HJC" sticker and replaced it with this:

These photos do not do it justice. It looks so bad a$$! If anyone else wants these decals, I can probably order more.
Thanks again!

Thats messed up. Safe enough to use when you get thrown from a bike in a wreck but not safe enough for use in a car when road racing.

Re: HELP I need a helmet and FAST!
Exactly what rating does he think it needs? Current SCCA rules for Solo say a helmet meeting Snell SA, K and M ratings are acceptable. SFI ratings of 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A and 41.2A are also acceptable. The SFI ratings are the same as Snell M open face/closed face and Snell SA open face/closed face. The only K rated helmet I'm aware of is K98. It's a karting helmet and is accepted by all sanctioning bodies.
