What's up with the 100% CPU usage on this board lately?
I have a thermostat CPU fan so it's quite noticeable when it revving. It's worst out in the main message board overview, varying wildly. It's only been this bad for the last two weeks or so. Now as I'm writing this it's constantly on 100%.. I know the animated smilies takes a lot of processor power unless one has a graphics card that relieves the CPU of such tasks, but the main overview has no smilies, only animated ads. If it's the ads, can I do anything about it? Maybe get a new computer?

Been discussed before:

In short, it only appears to affect some members with computers. It's been that way for quite some time. If this is just a new problem to you, then perhaps you changed your system to cause this result?

Re: What's up with the 100% CPU usage on this board lately?
Ok, thanks.
My home computer has always had that typing delay but then it's only a 400MHz processor.
My work computer is a HP/Compaq with a 2.8GHz P4 and an Intel 82865 graphics controller with 64MB memory. Never bothering delays with that one.
As I write this (at work, no animated smilies) the CPU varies between 40 & 90% with approx 7 seconds between peaks. It goes down to 2% if I put the window down.
I notice both computers work hard when there's more than one animated smilie on the screen, so I guess the animated ads are part of the problem.
At work I don't have administrators privileges, & I don't know what might have been changed (via the network) when I rebooted 3 weeks ago.

Ok, I guess you are obligued not to suggest removing the ads..
Guessing the animated gif ads was part of the problem I tried to change a setting.
I klicked on Tools, Internet Alternatives, Advanced, & then under Multimedia I unhooked "Play Animations on Webpages".
That solved the acute noise problem for me. There's still some typing delay, & just moving the mouse in a small circle makes the CPU run at 100% (so there's still someting heavy about the site), but at least the CPU runs at 1-2% now unless I actively do something.

Have you checked to see if your computer needs some driver updating? Usually that solves wonkey computer things that are unexplainable

Thanks for the tip! I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to look for (or where, but at least my home computer automatically updates with microsoft) but I'll show the phenomenon to a computer literate friend this weekend and see if he has any theories.

Is it only on this site? I had the same problem and it was undetected spyware running in the back ground with out me knowing it.

Yes, only here as far as I've roamed/ noticed. The network usage doesn't budge even one pixel up from 0% when the CPU happens to work hard so I doubt it's spyware. The computers at work are also quite well protected with firewalls etc.

Re: What's up with the 100% CPU usage on this board lately?
As I sit here and type, the CPU use only spikes to about 7% when I move the mouse or type. This is is on a 2.8ghz Pentium D, 2gb ram. Running XP professional SP3 beta, and using Firefox for a browser. Its not fast anymore but certainly not outdated for home/office use with light gaming on older games.
I would try using a different browser at home if you are using Internet Explorer. Try using either Firefox or Opera and see if it makes a difference.
Your home computer is definitely on its last legs. At 400mhz I doubt you could even deal with some youtube videos, the flash compression probably requires more CPU power than its got.
Your work computer on the other hand should have no problems at all handling any web browsing.

Re: What's up with the 100% CPU usage on this board lately?
Yes, I'm building something better for my home use, it's not able to play youtube video's properly.. I'll try to install & use something other than IE. I noticed that the CPU is not loaded when I move the mouse over vacant areas with the ads are out of sight, but even then it's loaded when moving over text. With the ads in sight it's loaded even in free spaces.
My friend's computer noticed the same effects but not at all to the same degree, but then he has a GPU that's even more powerful than his CPU. He had some opinions of what might be the cause but I only understand so much of it to be able to recite it here.
I also noticed the fan has started revving when swapping pages in eBay now, so the bottom line I guess is getting a more powerful graphics board that'll run animated gif's etc. so the CPU is relieved of such tasks.. "Heavy/ inefficient" code I guess is only going to become more & more common..
Thanks for contributing everybody!

mines fixed pretty well now it seems, just a little bit of delay in the typing but SO much better
so far anyways
also i disabled extra things in the advanced section of IE
animations, movies, etc
changed my RAM card out for another one as well
huge improvement RE of the delays here

Re: What's up with the 100% CPU usage on this board lately?
Yes, something has changed on the board, the CPU usage is acceptable now so no bad delays. I haven't changed anything with the computers. But recently I have encountered another problem with the board. It takes so long to load the pages now that I can go get myself a cup of coffee in the meantime. The top of the pages loads relatively quickly, but the useful stuff takes a lifetime to present..
