Headers on a 305 TBI
I was wondering if you needed to pull the engine, inorder to change the stock manifolds to aftermarket headers??

Another question: Is it hard to replace the gears in the rear end?? I wanna go from the 3.08 to a set of 3.73. What do I need to do to make it POSI??

you dont need to pull the enigne to put on headers but you do have to be careful espically on the pass. side. its really a tight fit. just be careful and take your time.

The drivers side is a breeze but the pass side is hard. You may have to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine a bit. Be prepered to sweet and cuss alot!!

If you've never swapped diff gears before, suggest you leave it to an expert. In order to make it POSI....just buy one

One thing to be aware of is that the stock manifold bolts may have little tabs on them to keep from backing out. If you don't take these tabs off, what you think was the correct socket won't fit. Take the vakve covers off as well. It will help with access to the bolts (less in the way). More than likely one or both motor mount bolts will need to be removed to jack the engine up an inch or so to slide the headers on. Maybe not though. It's not that big a deal.
It took me 14 hours to do my headers and y-pipe. The cat hook-up was a pain. Collector gaskets are a pain.
Take some advice and get the GOOD copper gaskets FIRST! Do not use the paper poop gaskets that come with the headers. Get some GOOD locking header bolts as well.
You learn alot as you go. I took my time with mine and could probably do a second set in a fraction of the time. I did not reuse my A.I.R. so that cleaned things up a bit.
Leave the gears to an ASE certified specialist!!!

RGZWS6, I second that. The headers are a PITA but if you setup right and make some room to work you should be okay. You should definatly leave the gears to a pro that's done it before. They have special tools to set it all up.

You had better have some heavy duty tools to do it yourself. My dad and I did a 3.73 and a posi swap summer before last. It was not an easy task. You need some fine measuring tools to get the backspacing and the pinion depth set right (you can do this with marking compound too). You will also have to press the bearings onto the pinion gear. We welded up a bearing puller and used the 40 ton hydraulic press to pull the old one off and press the new one on. Not a job for the faint hearted (or ill equiped).

Lifting the engine only an inch on the drivers side helped me slide the drivers side header on.
I kept my A/C in place!
I removed all of the AIR poop and the alternator before I started. The bolts were a piece of cake. Not one was rusted. Keep those little tabs in mind though if the exaust bolts have them.

My passenger side header was the easier one to do for me. I didn't have to lift the engine at all, just drop the starter and put it in from the bottom.
Do yourself a favor first, listen to me on this one, I know what I'm talking about.
Get a large set of side-cutters, CUT THE AIR LINES OFF YOUR MANIFOLDS.
Get a rachet and remove the AIR stubs.
Use assorted flathead screwdrivers to pry away the french locks on the exhaust manifold studs and bolts.
Buy good quality exhaust manifold gaskets.
The drivers side was the biggest PITA for me, the steering shaft was in the way, I had to loosen it to get the headers on.
The passenger side spark plugs after the headers are a big PITA.
Since I knew about the french locks, and I had the ***** to just cut those worthless AIR lines off the manifolds, my header and y-pipe install took me 3 hours.
To get Positraction, you need to buy a posi carrier. Buy the carrier according to what gears you are going to run, not what's in your car. You have a 2-series carrier, 3.73 gears are for 3-series carriers. A shop needs to do the install because they need to set the position of the gears themselves, it's a very delicate procedure, micrometers and ****.

Oh, and I did not re-use the A/C compressor bracket that bolts to the passenger side manifold, The compressor is on there pretty good to begin with, I'm not worried about it.
I did re-use the drivers side alt support, I used one of the stock manifold studs to bolt it back up.
My dipstick isn't monted to anything but the engine block. It aint going anywhere..

Re: Headers on a 305 TBI
I have a 1992 chevy Camaro rs 5.0 tbi with 5 speed and i purchased the hedman hedders (68481) and everywhere i have read that you have to motify the ac but my ac like yours is on pass side. Im having a really hard time trying to get the drivers side on. Ive already removed the alternator and steering shaft and still cant get it to line up. Any advice?
