Well, I'm not sure but the 4spd from my '85 Stang probably weight around 75-100lbs maybe.

 

Should be about 85 pounds when full. they are easy to bench press into a car I can put it to you that way.

I found a secret

Put the trans behind your head with your body at a 90 degree angle to the car.
Then raise up the tail housing and pull it on to your chest. With the main part of the trans on your right, roll over on to your right side and when you roll back pull the trans on to your chest.

You wont use all your strength b4 you get the trans to the point you can press it up to the car.

i heard somewhere that a t-5 is about 100lbs. lighter than the 700r-4 slushbox.

 

Not too hrad to bench press up into place. Why didn't I ever think of installing it like that ? I could never lift it up over my head Anyway, it is lighter than a 700R4 any day. Especially when you pull the tranny off and it comes down with the extra weight of the completely filled torque converter. However, I wouldn't call it 100 lbs heavier.

 

If you are gonna benchpress it into place, you better be able to do it quick, cause your arms fall asleep quick when you are under the car and your arms are in the air. Its not pretty to have something on your chest that you can't take off (I can tell you from experience).

 

Um, yeah, it is not all that heavy. I mean, even I can carry one around and manipulate it to some degree under the car. Use a floor jack to support the weight of the tranny though. That will leave all of your strength to use for aligning it with the engine. Either way, be careful doing it completely alone. It sucks when you drop things on you and there's nobody there to yell at.

 

If I couldnt lift an 80 pound tranny into my car, I woudnt be able to call myself a man.

ive done it by myself numerous times.. the bench press technique is where its at and having a jack nearby to help hold it is also nice.. pretty much neccessary actually

and i believe the official weight difference between two exact same thirdgens one with an auto and one with a manual is like 104 pounds. I sure as hell believe it, the 700r4 weighs enough to barely be able to move around by yourself (like sliding and dragging on the floor)

The manuals are easy to bench into place. The 700R4 is a real pain to move around when it is full of fluid. Without any fluid it is a lot easier and the case is light as h_ll.

Remember to watch your fingers when you pull out the tranny. I accidentally let if fall on my right index finger once on the way out, and once on the way in. This happened last April [hey a year ago!] and when I bend the finger it still snaps, took forever to get back to the straight position too.

 

I weighed one empty the other day, it came out to approximately ~75lbs. Who would install one of these full??

Even 75 pounds is not super easy to maneuver under the car unless you got some serious muscles on you. I remember when I had to put the valve body out of my old 700R4 back in the tranny. After a few minutes of messing with it my hands started getting really tired. That valve body is made of cast iron and it can be pretty heavy when you're trying to hold it like a platter and put bolts in it at the same time. LOL
