Car: 4
Engine: 6
Transmission: 5
1=country of origin - US
G = mfr = GM
2 = brand = Pontiac

The next few are for body style & restraint system

H = motor = LG4 (base 305 4-barrel, 145 HP)
4 = check digit = meaningless except to check for errors
D = year = 83 (80 is A, 81 is B, etc.)
1 = assembly plant = an error, that's either a L (Van Nuys CA) or N (Norwood OH)

From there out is the car's serial #, 1st car off the line was 100001

Other than that, it's a perfectly ordinary VIN, in relatively good shape, seems not to have suffered much degradation over the years.

If you would look on the Home page of this site, you would find a VIN decoder page with all the info you want.

And as a general rule, it's a good idea NOT to post you complete VIN. Some people can use a VIN for less than honorable purposes. I can find lots of information about you that you might not want me to know using your VIN. Then I can print up a phony registration, run down to the friendly neighborhood title loan company, get a few hundred bucks, and have them look for you when I don't make payments. I can do even worse...
