3rd gen i'm lookin at

i didn't notice a "lounge" in here or anything, so i decided to post this here.

i'm checkin out an 82 z28. its got a brand new interior, new paint, and a new carbed 350 in it. its a 4 speed (so i'm assuming stock).

i gotta convince my dad to let me borrow some bucks from him though haha. jobs have been hard to come by here in mass lately. being in high school sucks. but yea, this cars for 5k. so i think i'm gonna jump on it.

think it will make a nice hs car? it looks car show quality. really clean.

5k is too high for an 82 unless it is in almost perfect condition.

82 Z28s only had 305s and TH200C (they suck) automatic trannys, so a 4 speed wouldn't be stock, as if it really matters.

Price seems a little steep to me.
For that kind of money I'd expect a perfect body, all new steering linkages, A-frame bushings, ball joints, good tires/brakes/shocks-struts/aftermarket exhaust/glass/cooling system.
Accessories (alt, p/s pump,a/c compressor) would have to be new or nearly new.
A/C working (if equipped).
No leaks anywhere.

Basically, the car shouldn't need ANYTHING.

If it has T-tops, the seals would have to be new since they leak with age and cause rust.

The quality of paint would also be a major concern. Is it a quality job or a $200 quicky? A quality paint job costs over $2000, but will last 10 years or more. The $200 job will look good for abt 6 months, maybe..

I would get a buyers inspection done from a quality repair facility of your choice (not the sellers choice). They cost $50-100, but can save you literally thousands. If he's not willing to let you do the buyers insp, then forget it, he's hiding something.

5k is a steep price for any 3rd gen older than 90 in my opinion. Ihave an 89 in excellent shape, and I gave $2100 for it here in MO, I am from NJ and understand that prices are higher on the east coast, but 5k is still kinda steep, especially for an 82. If it were me, I'd shop around and see if you can't find one 87 or newer, you'll be happier, trust me.

5K - ha, the guy wants to get the money back that he sank into the car. It's not what the car is worth. Shop around and you should find some more reasonable deals.

I just picked up the 87 'Bird in my sig for an even trade. The guy was selling it for $1600. Very drivable, needs tuning mostly, some minor body work (surface rust). Put new gas struts for the hood and hatch, only because I didn't want to carry around a broomstick to hold them up. Has a few interior things that need replaced, dash pad, seats, console, nothing I can't live without if cash were tight. Does need a stereo system, but that's also something I can do without for some time...

Oops, I stand corrected..

It was the Sport Coupes, Berlinettas, and Fierbird S/Es that only came with autos (if they had V8s). My bad...

If you're partial to the '82 model, then I'd say do it. I/e you find a V8 '82 for 400-500 with a good body, you'll still put 2grand min) in an engine, 2grand into a paint job another 500 into the interior. Ofcourse you'll be able to spread it out and not take a large hit on the $$ a one time.

If you're just partial to 3rd gens, then I'd pass on it and look for a newer model with (IMO) better styling and features/upgrades.

they made super t-10's for 3rd gen f-bodies????? were they as strong as the older ones? if not is there any older super t-10's that would have a torque arm mount or does anyone make a adapter to mount a 3rd gen f-body torque arm to one? i assume they use a z-bar and not a hydrolic clutch? what years and models were they in and just how rare were they? if they are as good as the older ones i would love to get my hands on one and abandon my t-5 swap in favor of something that will hold togather but not cost me as much as a t-56...

I paid 6600 for my 83 L69, 34k miles, I don't call it a waste of money. . If its a stock 82, dont buy. If it has a built 350 in it, I would consider it.

But yes 82 Z28's came with a 4 speed manual because a.) I read on it, and B.) my uncle had one.

If memory serves me correct, that Saginaw 4 speed will be worse than the Non-World Class 5 speed...meaning you will have tranny problems behind a well built 350.

5 grand is far too much unless the car is all original and in showroom condition. just paid $1200 for a 91 formula 1LE in fair condition.

i would have to agree with dune, if everything is exactly described 3k would be a fair price, it sounds like the guy is tryin to get back what he put into the car, however all of us that have modded cars and sold them before know the downside to that, you never get back what you put into it, well almost never, and truthfully modding a car actually decreases its book value, its a labor of love and the cars only ever going to be as worth as much as it is to you. (or the idiot you fool into buying it )
