It's called dieseling, the most likely cause is a vaccum leak, mine leak was a shot carb.

Check all your vaccum lines.

Could be that little anti-run-on solenoid in the carb. The one in my old carb was fuct.

Dieseling...just got rid of that problem. Timing can be the cause, in my case it was too high an idle. Once I turned that down, I didn't have a problem. How's the engine temp? A cooler thermostat may help if you're overheating. Hope this helps...

Another excellent cause of dieseling or "run-on" is carbon deposits or other "hot spots" in the combustion chamber.

Another thing not to do is to shut the motor off at high idle, especially if the motor is prone to dieseling already. Place it in D before turning the key off or load the engine down with the clutch.

It's also not very good for the motor.

Choke, choke, choke. If you try to shut your car off at any more than 1000 rpms it will diesel. Clean the carb off, focus on the choke and replace the choke pull-off.

Why do you rev the motor to shut it off?
