VATS key vs. non VATS key

My son disabled the VATS according to the instructions in the tech section. We then took his keys to a hardware store to get a couple copies made for the door and ignition. The ones for the door work fine, but when we put in the new (non VATS) ignition keys, the ignition lock won't turn. It's like the key is not cut correctly. I had two made and they both do the same thing. Is there something else special about the VATS key that we are missing?

It's a 1989 firebird with 305 TBI.

Thanks,

John.

No, nothing special that would inhibit the cylinder from turning, I'd take'em back and have new ones cut.

It has to deal with the fact that the VATS key is longer than a standard key to accommodate the pellet in it. That is all.

The keys look identical for most of the length of the key. The only difference I can see is next to the handle part of the key. On the VATS key, it is a bit wider (not thicker) forthe first 1/4 inch or so. If I ask them to grind me another key, I suspect that it will be the same. I will need to fiddle with it some more and see if I can see any other reason.

I am comparing a VATS key and a Non-VATS key at this moment. The VATS key 1/4" longer than the Non-VATS key.

Yes, sorry I didn't mention that, the lengths of the keys are different. However, the "cut" length is the same on both. The uncut area is wider on the VATS key. Also there is a wide groove machined into one side of the key, and that machined groove extends farther up the key on tne non-VATS key. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I suspect not. Does the non-VATS key not go far enough into the ignition? That may be it. Maybe I need to machine the non-VATS keys a bit so they will go in farther.

That will not help you, You have to have the key extend beyond the contacts for the pellet for the VATS key remember. If you want a key cut so you can use it. Go to the dealership and have them cut you a brass key. Another question is, why can't you use the original key you had to start with?

When he got the car, it only came with one key. He wants a spare, but didn't want to spend what it costs to get a VATS key.
