Engine Stalls and Cuts out at Speed

Here is my issue. I have the 2.8L engine and it idles fine in park and for most of the time on the road runs smooth as well. However, sometimes on the road the engine will completely cut out and the tach will totally drop down to 0. Ocassionaly at a stoplight the car will just all the sudden stall and I will have to start it up again.

I took the car to Midas and the mechanic there said he could find no problems with anything. I thought it could have been the fuel pump but he checked the fuel pressure in the garage and it was fine.

Here at the things I have replaced:

-Ignition control module
-IAC motor
-Plug wires
-Distributor cap and rotor
-Rebuilt the distributor
-Ignition Coil
-Fuel filter less than 12 months ago.

I've been thinking maybe it is the computer but that could just be a stab in the dark. The car was completely running fine til a few days ago and out of the blue this problem happens. I wish it was something like bad gas that would be nice. Help me out guys lemme know what you think.

Checking the fuel pressure is not enough, I'd monitor it while driving.

That is a good idea and I thought of that too. The problem is now the car completely will not start. There is spark coming from the coil to the distributor but no spark to the cylinders. All I can do right now is send it to my mechanic and see what he says.

Worked on it some more tonight.

I changed out the ignition module with the stock one I had and I got the car to run but very very rough. I thought it was the timing that was off but it wasn't. I adjusted the timing too far and the car shut off and I wasn't able to start it again. It's getting fuel it seems and spark. I was thinking maybe somehow the module is getting burned up or maybe the computer is fried. Heck I am so lost right now I hope my mechanic can figure it out.

Let us know what you find, many people post problems, and never post the fix, which could save others time, and money.

It's fixed and the problem was the distributor. I don't know how that fixed it but I guess maybe something I did in the rebuild killed the distributor. Anyways so far it runs fine and it is running again. Not sure if this helps anyone else but I am good to go.

i know that when I nstalled a Proform distributor in my Motown 350 block with the TPI Vortec Intake I had to shim it because it was bottoming out, I imagine that's what killed my stock Dizzy.

Well I could see how you may have run into your problem. The thing was I rebuilt the stock distributor. I used all ACDelco parts as well so I have no idea what killed it. I still need to go out for a long drive to make sure he indeed got all the kinks out. When I pulled the distributor out before I took it to the shop the gear wear looked correct. It does feel nice to have the car running again, now only thing I need is a paint job.
