low oil pressure
when i first start my car its at 30, then as i drive, it will slowly drop down to 10-0...what does this mean and what is usally a common cause of this?

you need to hook up a mechanicle gauge to check actual pressure. electronic gauges can lie...which is most likly the case. its pretty common for the sending units on our cars to misread or go out. mine has and i "have" 30 psi constantly, but i know my pressure is good from a mechanical gauge. there is a galley tap by the distributor, timing cover (somtimes) and by the sending unit. im 99.9% positive its your sending unit because at 10-0 psi like you said, you will definatly have bearing failure.

yes take her to the shop for a mechanical test gauge. the rattle could be anything, i doubt its a bearing. if it was a bearing begin spun, you would hear a knock, not a rattle.

I think he means "pinking" ie pre-ignition as us old folks call it.
If you havent got a "rumble" ie main bearings, usually accompanied by a heavy knocking from the bottom end, still get it checked with a proper oil gauge.
If its a faulty gauge, not so bad, but if there is almost no oil pressure, its time to stop driving and get it fixed before its un-fixable.

You could try switching to a thicker oil, like 20w50 and see if the pressure still drops. If it does, I'd suspect the oil pump is gettin' tired. If the pressure stabilizes, i'd say your bearings are worn and need the thicker oil until you can replace them.

doesn't matter how thick your oil is, your bearings have to maintain approx. 3/1000 clearance. thicker oil does not replace that clearance if you go over it. i still say its your sending unit

keep it simple
start simple....get it tested with a mechanical gauge...report back on the findings...then we will go from there

Main bearing clearance is 0.0005-0.0022 and rod bearing clearance is 0.0005-0.0026. As bearings approach the maximum limit, how do you think the mechanic takes up the slack? If you said "He uses a thicker motor oil", then you're a winner!!! You may now head to the next round of our questions. If you answered incorrectly, we're sorry to see you go, but wish you a happy day anyway!

where did you hear that? thats rediculous. .0001 won't barly even allow the hydrodynamic wedge around the bearing which is critical to friction bearing lubrication. 2/1000 yah, thats fine. what kind of mechanic are you dealing with, a greese monkey? taking out "slack" by changing to a thicker oil is rediculous, any "true" mechanic knows to do it right and put in new bearings.

If you have a motors manual for your vehicle look it up. Otherwise, you can take it up with any car magazine who's ever declared the same or claimed to hear the same from a mechanic who built one of there motors. Just remember, don't shoot the messenger.
