Strong gas smell

I am getting a strong gas smell coming from the driver rear fender area, near the filler. It only happens when I have a 1/2 to full tank. The cap is good, there are no holes in the filler neck, and nothing spilling during filling or any other time. I am thinking maybe that the cheap white plastic valve under there may be faulty. If not, what else could it be? It may be causing the low milege also.

Thanks, Rich

Been keeping an eye out, but it's hard to find Camaros and Birds in junkyards around here.

Had the same problem. Turned out to be a cracked gas tank. Where the filler tube attached to the tank. Never leaked, couldn't even see wetness on the tank, but when it was parked in the garage overnight, the smell was terrible. Glad my garage didn't explode.

Re: Strong gas smell
It might be leaking out from the top at the sealing ring did you do a fuel pump recently.

No, to my knowledge the pump is the origninal. I will have some time tomorrow to get a closer look at everything.

edit: Also, I will add that when it was tested for emissions it passed the gas cap test along with everything else.

Re: Strong gas smell
Filler neck leaking, cracked around factory solder joint. Had the same issue, smelled bad when tank was near full.

The problem

The fix

Did you have a lot of gas leaking? I have no leaking at all.

Re: Strong gas smell
No dripping, just a very bad gas smell and somewhat poor mileage. Never noticed drops on the floor.

What valve are you referring to? Is does it mount in-line near the gas tank on one of the vent hoses? I'm asking cuz i just got everything back together in my car and I don't have a valve hooked up to either of my vent lines. I think forgot about it or lost it! Please confirm..

Yes the white valve. Did you know that cheap little thing costs $40 with shipping from the dealer and gm parts web site?
