84 Camaro won't stay running

So last night I went to bring my lady friend some food and when I went to leave my car started to squeak in the front end and it seemed to change with the RPMs as it would if it were just squeaky belts or something. Well today it's been doing it still but when I was coming home from work the car started to drop rpms as i slowed down for a red then finally died at the stop light, it started back up fine and I went about 3 more miles down the road and when I went to turn into my driveway it died again in the road but i had no power and couldn't turn on the hazzards or anything, so me and my brother pushed it in and then let it cool off before trying to start it, it starts now and has all electric but still idles really low like its gonna die when we go around the yard. All the vacuum lines seem to be attached (I had this issue once and realized the vacuum advance wasn't hooked up before) but I was wondering if it was related to the squeaky noise the night before? I honestly think that's just a pulley though, and the alternator is not locked up to be the issue either. Any ideas?

sounds like electrical problems-is the "dancing needle"
or mixture control solenoid ticking while the engine
idles? Also certain electrical faults could cause the
alternator to try to put out too much voltage, causing
the belt to squeal

Re: 84 Camaro won't stay running

So I went to my parents place today to check that out on the car, and after looking for about an hour with my lady friend and not hearing any ticking, i realized the only electric sort of thing actually able to plug into the carb is the electric choke, so then I decided to run the numbers on my carb, cause there has been a decent amount done to my car, and i learned that the carb is a 76. So what would be my equivalent to check instead of the control solenoid for this year of carb? Or does this help troubleshoot my issue at all?

Re: 84 Camaro won't stay running

You need to get the correct carb. The one that the car came with is a (E4M SERIES CARB) controlled by the ECM which cotrols the running condition, fuel mixture and idle. The Carb that someone installed will not work with your car which is controlled by the ECM. Good luck. Thats it in a nut shell

Well the car has worked fine to this point and I'm not changing the carb, I understand what you mean but am not sure if the carb is the issue with this given problem now anyways.

Re: 84 Camaro won't stay running

Well I did figure out that it's not one of my pulleys making the squeak, so I guess that rules out the alternator trying to be charged too fast idea? Any other ideas?
