I have a 1992 Camaro rs 6 cylinder 5 spd and when i am driving and shifting gears it starts to shake very intensly, mostly when in 5th gear. even when i throw it into neutral to try and stop the shaking, it continues. Im thinking maybe a stuck lifter or something of that sort. Any ideas??

 

When exactly does the problem happen? All the time, or just when you're driving? At all speeds or only above a certain speed? It could be almost anything and impossible to diagnose without more information.

 

it happens at speeds around 40, and yes only when i am driving. when its at in idle, then no it never happens. i just find it weird that when i drop it into neutral, it continues shaking and will not go away for about 10 seconds, today it would stop for a while

 

It could be a bent axle. I had this problem, and I changed out the rear end. No more shaking.

 

but it JUST started doing it. and yes its speeds of 40+. if im in 5th gear and i keep the RPMS in between 1500 and 1700, it doesnt do it but as soon as i hit 1700 rpms, it does it

 

Alot of vibration/shaking problems come from a tire going bad.sometimes not so easy to visually see.

 

howy3 is right. It could be a bad tire. At lower speeds, the problem might not show its self, but if the belts are separating, they may be giving way as the tire spins faster. I would try a spare to see if that doesn't do it.

 

that would make since only because when i turn sharply regardless of what way, it almost feels like i have a flat and sounds like rubbing or something. the car almost bounces a little bit

 

how do i know which tire is bad?

 

The only way is process of elimination. I am assuming the shaking is coming from the rear?

 

i cannot tell. the whole car just shakes intensly. it almost feels like its coming from the front

 

if u feel the vibration in the steering wheel its in the front if you feel it in ur butt its in the back

 

steering wheel definatly. and the shifter shakes just as much as the steering wheel. it must be coming from one of the front tires then

 

others have you going down a simple path to check. However, I'd like to offer a little clarification so you don't find yourself getting caught in what programmers call, "a loop"

well, that is engine speed so if your engine was going to do something at, say, 1700 rpms, then it would do it be it in first gear, second, third, you get the picture

You also said that when you hit a certain speed the shaking begins even if you throw in the clutch. THat right there eliminates engine speed

Ask someone to watch the front of your vehicle as you drive it toward them at around 15-20 mph. They should visibly be able to tell if a tire is out of round or looks funny. The same goes for the rear if nothing is seen in the front (except you'll be pulling away from them)

If need be, use the zoom on a video camera or binoculars so you get a closer view

 

and what if its not the tire?

 

if its not the tire id wanna personally drive it before i say anything else cuz what some1 says and what they mean arnt always the same
