Cool sounding starter?
I have one of those gear reduction starters and it works great but my car sounds like a truck starting up. Was wondering what the thoughts are here on some options. The kind I recall that have a higher speed and a cool "whine" to them. Are they 24V? Opinions sought. Thinking of going back to a stock style starter- at least it doesn't sound like a truck.

Re: Cool sounding starter?
I mean, if the starter is currently working and you aren't experiencing any problems with it I'd leave it alone.
However, when it dies, if there are no warranties on it, just go to Autozone and get a LT1 starter. Its smaller than the hem starter, easily available, and fits perfect.
As far as sounding cool? Don't know where to go with that.

Re: Cool sounding starter?
Gotta agree here with Ironwill and Thirdgen89GTA , to me the only "uncool" sound a properly shimmed starter could possibly make would be the sound of it not starting the engine on command .
The starter works for what ? 2 or 3 seconds each time you drive the car ? Cool sounds notwithstanding I'll go with the first rule of mechanical devices ;
"If it ain't broke , don't eff with it !!!!"

I know I'm being picky. But damned if it doesn't sound like a UPS truck starting up.

I know what you’re talking about. It is definitely the high pitched whine from a gear reduction starter. Very familiar with it being around dirt track racing for many years. I too dig the sound it creates so consider yourself not alone. Alas, the sound of the car starting regardless of the symphony coming from the starter is always music to my ears

Wait. Op. Do you like the sound, or dislike the sound?
the gear reduction starters increase the applied motor torque. Which is required for higher compression engines.

Most of the PMGR (permanent magnet gear reduction) starters are going to have the whine from the gearing. "They" said the PMGR starter I put in my Mustang several years ago would whine, but I really can't tell any difference. Fortunately I did the swap to get away from the 1966 Ford technology of the factory starter, so it didn't bug me. Point being, I wouldn't expect anyone will even notice a difference. You might not even be able to hear the difference from inside the car, FWIW. The PMGRs do seem to pull less on the battery, and whirl over with more authority, in addition to being smaller, and lighter.

Re: Cool sounding starter?
I really don't know what my starter sounds like. The LT1 fires over fast, and man does that cam sound good.
Unless the OP is talking about something like McLaren did for the 720s. The "hot start".

That's dumb.
I can make my engine burst to life too by opening up the the IAC parked position during crank and adjusting the ramp-down time to idle as a function of coolant temp. I do it in my Holley EFI tune when coolant is hot.... and it doesn't take 30 seconds of fiddling with gizmos and a flip screen.

Re: Cool sounding starter?
I can do it by cracking the throttle as I crank the car. But I'd only do it when it was warm, and recently running so I'm sure of lubrication.
However for the 720s? Hypercar life. The 720s is a sick, sick car. So fast. They've cracked 9's BONE stock. Thats nuts. And this is a car that can handle, not a Demon with a drag pack. And with minor bolt-ons and stock turbo's they are approaching the 8's.

Re: Cool sounding starter?
I swapped the OEM starter for a GM mini-starter when I did the 383 and cleared the headers great. When I built the 421 which has larger headers I switched to an MSD starter which turn my 13:1 compression motor a lot easier. it about same size as the GM mini starter and it is clockable so "0" issues with header clearance.
