Smog/Air Pump Removal

I'm wanting to remove the air pump to free up room in the engine bay. From what I've read it's not needed other than for emissions which isn't a thing in South Carolina.
On my engine there is only one belt that goes from the air pump to the front of the water pump. Would it be safe to just remove that one belt and not have any issues?

Re: Smog/Air Pump Removal

On your set up it could literally be that simple, I would also pull the pump and remove the AIR tubes from the exhaust manifolds to really free up some space. Just be sure to use the correct plugs for the manifolds, Edelman number 120500 will work great. The electrical connections and solenoids are easy to remove as well. The hardest thing to remove is the pipe that runs along the back of the motor but leaving that in place is not a huge deal as its not really visible.

After deleting all that it really cleans up the engine bay and makes it much easier to change spark plugs and work in there.

Some guys mention changing the tune for AIR delete but many have not and had no issues, you can research it on here but I would not tear into the tune unless you wanted to ditch EGR as well .

They have to be plugged at least. Use flare nut wrenches, penetrating oil, and heat.

Re: Smog/Air Pump Removal

I'm trying to remove it all. Do you know a way to remove the pipe that wraps around the back of the engine?

Re: Smog/Air Pump Removal

It's tied into the ground nut on the passenger side. I got it with a flex head ratchet and shallow socket. I'm not sure if the profanity helped but I did sprinkle it in there.

Profanity always helps lol. Was it easier to get from underneath the car or top?

Top, it's on the back of the head. This photo is the driver's side but same location on the other side to give you some idea:

Re: Smog/Air Pump Removal

Even if you pull that bolt its kinda wedged in there... I think it mightr / will be necessary to pull out the distributor to make it easy....est.....

I gave up and left the pipe in there lol

Remove the pipes from the manifolds and plug them for sure.... it makes spark plug removal SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier

Are you interested in selling your smog pump? I am in need of one for my LU5.

Re: Smog/Air Pump Removal

I'd be willing to sell the smog pump. It's still in working condition.
