Puel PUMP

I have an 88 Iroc 305 TPI. I drove to university of washington today and watched the Huskies get stomped by Navada but when i can back my car wouldn't stop. I don't here the pump whining and when i pushed in on the shrader valve on the fuel rail there was nothin. It has a full tank of gas in it (go figure) I have been experiencing hard starts so I replaced the pump relay, didn't help. I bought the car in april or may and was told the car sat for a year. (no gas in the tank when i picked it up) Sound like a fuel pump? HELP PLEASE

If the pump's not priming (runs for 2 seconds when you first turn the key to RUN position) next step is to verify it's getting voltage.

There's a 3-pin connector near the tank on the driver's side, easily accessible. Figure out which one's voltage (it varies) or just use a test light and test each one. Have a buddy turn the key to RUN while you probe each pin.

I am not sure on your 88 but on my 92 there is a fuel pump test on the ALDL. On mine it is the lower left terminal. Use a test light to jump 12 v to it and you should here the pump turn on. I would also do the test Kevin mentioned above. Good luck...

I was told by my friend's dad that if the ignition modual goes out that it won't allow the fuel pump to turn on. Is that true?

My friend's cousin's neighbor's dad said the ignition module doesn't come into play when just turning the key to RUN. The ECM activates the relay for the 2sec prime described above.

After this, the ignition module comes into play and if the ECM doesn't see reference pulses it won't close the fuel pump relay...but the oil pressure switch will usually close while the engine's turning and feed voltage to the pump anyway.

Well i checked for power at the fuel pump and there is for the 2 secord prime, but still no noise from the pump. Sounding more like the pump everyday.

Good troubleshoot. I highly recommend the Walbro 255 or 340 pump, both are drop-in replacements and will keep up with whatever fuel needs your engine has. Personally I like the 340 better, because it draws less amperage at the same delivery pressure.

This guy has a good reputation:

WOW!! That guy has some good prices for the Walbro. I got mine from Thunder Racing and paid about $150. That is a Holley pump but it is made by Walbro.

To bad you don't have the money to get the high flow pump now because pulling the tank to change out a pump is not the most fun way to spend a weekend...

If you get a stock replacement, stick with a Delco one and not a cheesy import. Most of the chain stores carry Delco pumps, but you have to ask for them.
