1985 305 TPI to 1988 350 TPI

Right Now I have 350 TPI (from an 88 Formula) , wiring Harness and ECM and I am wanting to put it in my 85 T/A 305 TPI and want to know if I should keep my original harness and ECM and get a Custom chip (I was considering fastchips.com) to put in it. Or put the the entire harness and Ecm from the 88 into my car. My main consern is the Gauges. I have a cable driven speedo and the 88 is VSS. Is the the Gauge Harness a different harness all together or am I going to have problems. (I do not want to risk doing modifing the harness) This is my daily driver and the swap with have to only take about a week to do.

Just do the repin & splice on the 85 harness and then plug the 88 ECM into it. The whole thing takes 3 hours and will save you down time and aggrivation.

I found it much easier to replace my harness with a new one. The last thing I wanted to do is dick with moving around a million wires, then spending *** knows how long trying to figure out why it doesn't work, just to realize that I goofed up one splice.

I got the harness from an 87 and spent a whole 2 hours replacing it. The only difficult part is enlarging the bulk-head hole in the kick panel by 1/4".

So I should have no problems with getting the gauges to work? Just take out the old harness and ECM and replace it with the new one and ECM?

Do I understand Corectly

No Jim is not talking about changing the gauge harness. Leave that one alone. He's talking about the harness that runs from the ECM to the engine bay.

So does the gauge harness ever connect to the ECM harness b/c if they do not then this seems like a very easy swap

I do not know about Camaros but I know that the 88 formula has a few guages in different places so does that play an issue in the swap.

You'll need the VSS input for the camaro, it's mounted behind the speedo.

Right now my 85 T/A is not VSS it is cable driven and I do not plan on converting it. So what will I need to make this work.

Yes, you do have a VSS. It is mounted behind the speedo on the instrument cluster. The cable drives the speedo and the VSS "reads" the revolutions of the speedo head.

Ok, now I am a little confused. b/c the 88 Formula that I am taking the 350 and harness out of does not have any speedo cable it is all wires so I assumed that was VSS and my 85 has a speedo cable so I assumed it was cable driven like all older cars are. So will I have to convert my car over to new system(which I really do not want to do) or buy an aftermarket speedo. Also will I have to repin my guage harness for the the new ECM harness.

Jim: since I know you have done the swap what are your thoughts on this.
