Will not idle...

89 GTA, TPI 305, 5 speed

Went for a 20 minute drive last evening, parked for 1 hour, came back to the car, started fine, but now will not idle. Stays running if I work the pedal, dies if I let off.

Had no prior issues before this.

My list to check tonight:
Vacuum leak?
TPS sensor failed?
IAC valve stuck?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Will not idle...

Took the car to cruise night Friday, 15 minutes from the house. Ran good on the way there. car sat for 1 hour and this time did not start. Just cranked, cranked, cranked. Found a can of ether and was able to get a really bad idle going. Would not rev above 1000 RPM.

Seems to be heat soak related?

Help please.

Re: Will not idle...

So, I just got back from getting the stranded car. Air temp around 65 degrees. Starts right up. Drove it home.

As the car got a little warmer, could tell it was off a little, but made it home without having to pay a towing bill.

What next?

Re: Will not idle...

Well, it could be a dozen things..

Weak spark signal, or fuel pressure dropping off.
Timing issue maybe.. but, unlikely..

Usually upon startup; it's fuel or spark.

Verify you have good spark and 43+ PSI fuel
pressure at the rail.. and come back to us!

Does the car throw any codes? (SES light?)

Re: Will not idle...

No SES light yet.

Replaced the TPS yesterday, no better.

Ordered an ALDL cable, should be here Wednesday, then hopefully will be able to see what's going on.

Re: Will not idle...

I grounded A and B terminals. SES flashed code 34.

Re: Will not idle...

Cleared the code, and it did not return. Ran up to 160 degress. No start.

Hope that cable gets here soon.

Re: Will not idle...

Welcome to the MAF (WTF mate) club!

Code 34 is a bad reading at the Mass air flow sensor.
Or even worse is a bad ECM.. The ALDL will help, but
I bet you can get your anwsers without it.

And you said its heat soak related? How old is the unit?

Do a few searches on the Code 34, there is a ton
of information on it.. Like mostly anything on these
cars ..there is no "one fix".. Usually takes abit of
investigative work.

Wierd the code 34 doesnt come back after you cleared it though..

Hopefully, I get my code 33 rectifed this weekend!
