Code 42 and 33
Hey guys. I'm at my wits end. So, the ignition module failed a while back. I had to replace the whole distributor because the wiring was corroded to the ignition module. I replaced the distributor and had the car running but I knew it wasn't timed properly. It took some time but I got my tools back from a friend and started checking the timing. During this process the fuel pump failed. Replaced the fuel pump and now I can continue with the ignition.
I have checked the timing over and over. I went so far as to put a compression gauge on the #1 cylinder to verify I was at TDC. The rotor is pointing to the appropriate plug on the cap. I can verify that I am close to time....about 5-10 advanced, but I notice some jumping.
The car still won't start. It tries and stumbles, but it won't run for any longer than a second or two. I checked the codes and I have 42 and 33. Is this a problem with the new ignition module?? Does anyone have an idea where to look first?

Thanks,

Have you tried flooring it while cranking. This puts the ecm in clear flood mode Incase it’s flooded.
Sounds like you got the distributor installed correctly.
Have you gone back and verified fuel pressure after the pump install ?
Is this in your profile 92 tpi speed density ?

I haven't tried flooring it. But yes, fuel pressure is there. I have a permanent gauge installed.

What about checking injector pulse with a noid light ?
You might have leaking injectors and a vats issue. Just guessing.

Tried the flooring it bit, it started more than it has ever started. Runs terrible likes it's missing on a bunch of cylinders. I'm not sure what this means though..
Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it was really flooded, it might be worth replacing the spark plugs then continue to diagnose.

Re: Code 42 and 33
You might want to disconnect the battery for 10 min or so to clear the codes

Re: Code 42 and 33
Hi Tuned,
I replaced the plugs and it will start, but there is still an issue. It won't idle without holding the accelerator open a little. I can put it in gear and it doesn't miss like a cylinder misfire, it just randomly misfires and the tach jumps when this occurs (My tech II confirms this random change in RPM). What is the IAC reading supposed to be at idle? Mine is saying 160 with a learned value of 58. Maybe a stuck IAC? But that doesn't explain the random misfire and jumping RPM
Thanks again

Re: Code 42 and 33
The iac should be around 20 engine warm. The iac stuck open should cause a high idle. Do you still have the code 33 ?

Re: Code 42 and 33
I didn't check for the code 33. The first step in the link you posted says to fix any rough idle first. I still haven't been able to fine tune the timing because it won't idle.
I'm thinking the IAC is stuck closed. It will stay running as long as I keep the throttle partially open. I found ACDelco 217-415 on Amazon, but that's an $80 guess. Do you know of any way to confirm it's stuck closed?
Thanks.
