Modified T-5....what can it handle?

I'm looking at a '91 bird right now with the L03 305TBI in it and the 3.08 open rear with a T-5. Eventually, (next spring/summer if all goes well), I'm planning on dropping a built 350 into it with somewhere around 350hp hopefully. At that time, I would also be installing a new rear with posi and probably 3.27/3.42 gears.

My goal is to see mid 12's with this car eventually. Now, I've read that a stock T-5 couldn't handle this very long... My buddy and I can rebuild the trans using titanium syncros and cobalt-coated shift forks for just the cost of parts. How much power should this be able to hold? My buddy said he thinks probably 10% more than stock, but I was wondering what you guys would think.

Also, what's the difference between the WC T-5 and a standard T-5? Thanks!

next to zero if not zero syncos and shift forks aren't the weakest part

Yeah I heard the casing and the gears will bust when they flex, but mine is doing well. I say just run it and wait and see if something breaks, cause chances are it will be fine as long as there is no traction.

Yeah, I'm not planning on running slicks or DRs any time in the near future

Well I am running DR's this weekend for the first time and I am praying that the T-5 is OK.

Everyone loves to complain about how T5's are weak, but they actually hold up pretty nicely. I personally have been beating the living sh*t out of my T5 for almost 4 years now, and it still shifts great. It has almost 180,00 miles and it's a non WC. I pulled it out of my retired 86 TA and now it's doing duty behind my slightly modded 305 TPI in a 92 Z28. Clutch pops, power shifts, constant flooring, constant downshifting, and I road race the car at least 3 times a year, still no porblem.

I know, some of them just blow up after a slight amount of abuse. But some of them just take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. There are also several companies that offer stronger, upgraded internals and complete built up units. G-force and D&D are the first two that come to mind.

<-- Look, he's even powershifting his T5!
