How much can a rebuilt 700R4 handle?

I'm not talking about change the input shaft to a hardend one, I mean just a regular shelf rebuild kit. I am planning on making about 400-420hp and 450-460 ft/lbs of torque. The tranny I have now is slipping and the stall is really weak.

Will a rebuilt tranny hold on to that much power?

407 is about the upper limit on HP and 466 for torque

i've had a guy rebuild mine for $1000 which was for parts and R&R. He put new bands, corvette servo, etc.. and i have a 3500 stall. my 383 puts out about 500HP/TQ and havent had any problems. i've got the B&M megashifter and it snaps in every gear.

Thanks man.

One more question. Are you able to change the ratios in the 700R4?

we are the only people in the country as of now building a 2.66 ratio first gear 700r4.and we sucessfully use our stage 1 700r4 at 450 horsepower,450lbsft in normally aspirated applications.

I am running about 335 flywheel horsepower and about 380 ft/lbs of torque through a near stock rebuild (in my garage) of a 1992 van 4L60(same thing as a 700r4 just called a 4L60(non E) in 1992. It is in a Chevy Van that I have beat on for 15,000 miles with no problems yet. The only thing special in it is the Vette 2-4 Servo, Vette TV boost valve, Transgo Corrective shift kit, and modified the governor for 5,500 rpm upshifts with a B&M kit. Oh and I have a 2,000 rpm lockup converter meant for a 4.3 S10 (Actually stalls @ 2,500 rpm in the van). All I have to do is mash the pedal and let the transmission do the work.

Has survived my heavy foot, track and dyno abuse, towing my 5,500# boat, numerous cars, climbed Ratan pass with my foot on the floor pulling something a couple of times. It still chirps the tires (P255-70-R15s with 3.08 posi) on every WOT 1-2 shift. Hasn't even warmed the fluid up enough to turn it gray.
