4th gen rear in 3rd gen??

I know this is a pretty staight forward swap, but just wondering if anyone who has done this has any pics of how far it will push the wheels out, I have been told 1.5 to 2 inch per side, but am curious to actually see the results before I decide what to do. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Search on front page does work - just takes patience.

Brakes? Many 4th gen rears have disk brakes already - I got a 2000 rear, now I have LS1 rear discs

i dont think its rubing.....but i got no good tire to test it ill know this summer with my slick. For the break, 9 bolt and 10 bolt have different backplate.

your 94 rear should come with pbr break ?

im from saint-eustache et oui je parle francais

pbr=aluminium galiper and not power break

my rear was coming with ls1 12" disk break your rear should come with lt1 11.xx disk break

maybe your galiper carrier from your 9bolt can bolt up to the 10 bolt but im not 100% sure

I fit ZO6 rear rims on mine with no spacers and a fourth gen rear. Tires line up like factory...

is it worth it to do this swap ?
I'm considering this swap myself but I'm going to run 400rwhp
how much power can 4th gen rear handle ?

can I use 95-96 Impala SS rear end or it should be Fbody to fit straight forward

10 bolt rear is 10 bolt rear - 3rd gen or 4th gen, will all handle the same power in stock form - can also be beefed up the same if needed - welding axle tubes, etc. There is a tech article on beefing up the 10 bolt rear.

Only thirdgen or fourthgen rears have the torque arm mount.

No, the caprice rear is set up like the monte's. They use a four link. Not a torque arm set up. That and I doubt the width would be right...

I think the point is being missed - the ONLY rear swap you can make (without major welding/fabbing is a 3rd or 4th gen (Fbody) rear. I understand 9 bolt Fbody rears were stronger, but they are rare, expensive, and hard to get parts for (what I read). An Fbody 10 bolt rear can be made plenty strong enough with girdles and having the axle tubes welded all the way around - there is a tech article on it (tech articles on main page).

The advantage to a 4th gen rear is 1) many are already positraction, and 2) they have disc brakes. I paid like $250 for my year 2000 LS1 3.42 posi rear - That's a damned sight cheaper than the $400 for posi rear parts/gears and installation, and the $900+ cost of fabbing brackets and getting parts to have rear disc brakes.

same for me its more cost than durability.....my rebuilt was costing way more than a complete 4thgen rear and 4.10 gear install

i dont have big power for now but if it handle an ls1 it should handle my 225hp 350 smog engine

As mentioned - the Caprice does not have the torque arm mount, so the rearend won't mount in an Fbod. The gears inside could be used, but why? You'll have to pay a shop to install, as this can't be done in the driveway (unless you have the right expensive tools, and plenty of rear end knowledge). Install of new gears and posi is not a simple matter of swapping parts - gears sets wear themselves into their environment, thus swapping any gearset means properly shimming to exact clearances - requires precision calipers.

If your going to have a rear built, then have new gears/posi installed - why spend all that installation money on used junk with an unknown history?

And the only true way to know if a rearend has posi, and what gearset it contains, is to take the cover off and look (count gear teeth).

Well the reason is good ole money. The 2 caprices i am talking about I can get whatever I want off of them.

If the gear sets are in the same series as mine and I reuse my gears, pinion depth wouldnt change so all i have to worry about is backlash. Am I thinking correctly?

Sorry about the hijack.

the newer body caprice's use an 8.5" 10 bolt not the f body 7.5. the boxy caprices were 7.5 though I believe...
