700r4 shifts into gear pretty hard

I have a stock (AFAIK) 700r4 with 190k on it. That is probably why it does this, but i'm hoping it isn't. When I shift the transmission into gear (reverse or forward) it hits kinda hard and the car jerks. It does it worse once it has had time to heat up. Reverse doesn't do it as bad as forward, but they both do. When I drive the car for the first time that day it shifts fine though. It only shifts hard when putting it into gear, once I'm in gear it drives perfectly. Is my transmission just warn out or is it possible that I can change something to fix it.

ps. I am running a non-computerized engine and two of the wires that were running from the transmission to the computer are now no longer connected (i cut the entire computer out). Did these two wires possibly help shifting into gear.

If you have your idle speed set too high on the carb, or excessive play somewhere in the driveline (ring/pinion or u-joints), it can cause it to go into gear really hard. If the back brakes aren't making good contact, that can cause it too. If you can rule out these things, then I'd worry about it possibly being something with the trans internally. If it is something in the trans, I would guess maybe excessive play in the planetaries or the sprag assembly.

I know it's not because of the idle speed since I have the idle set at 500-600rpm. It might be the rear brakes. It is actually a very good chance that they are not adjusted right. As far as I know, the U-joints are in great shape.

Well, I'm not sure why you'd just cut wires off without knowing at least what they did first, but those wires going to the driver's side of the transmission are for the torque converter lockup... Better put that system back in operation if you want your transmission to last much longer.. Is your TV cable adjusted right?? Do you have the proper geometry at the carb?? A gauge at the test port on the transmission would tell you for sure.

I kinda figured that the two were for torque converter lockup. I will look into that and figure out something to make it work. I might buy one of the kits that do it for me. Either way, of the 5 or 6 wires (don't remember how many) from the transmission, only two are currently disconnected.

Is your TV cable adjusted right?? Do you have the proper geometry at the carb?? A gauge at the test port on the transmission would tell you for sure
i have no clue what you are talking about. I am assuming the TV cable is the passing gear cable? If so, it is adjusted correctly. Other than that, I am not sure what you are talking about.

The 1986's did not have forward accumulator. This made the engagement somewhat pronounced. 1987 & up had the forward accumulator, which made for a nicer engagement. The wiring is for the TC lockup, make sure you get that back asap.

question about the TC lockup...

I tried grounding the tan/black wire that is coming from the transmission (which is the same one that runs to the top-left connecter on the ALDL) when I did this it did not seem to lock the converter as I expected. I expected with it grounded it should bog down really low when the engine hit 2nd gear, or at least drop a couple hundred rpm when I enabled it while cruising down the road. Nothing at all seemed to happen. What do I need to do to make the thing lock like it should?
