3:73 w/ trans

Ok i am going to be having 3:73 put in next week with a high performance shift kit. He will be putting a corvette servo and replacing some little stuff. I had 2:73 before and wasent to bad of a take off. When the car hits the kick down good going 15mph i can get a chirp.

I just want to know what this should do? Good up grade or not worth the money.

Then my freind has a hyundai tribune with the V6 and we raced for fun. he beat me by 1 1/2 car links but we took off at 70 and went to 110. Some of you might say get off the site for going over a 100 but live alittle! Do you think i will beat him or no.

thanks
kevin

I raced a 07 tib from 35 MPH i totally destroyed him with my 305 TPI and 2:73 i think with your car and 3:73s you should have this easily those things are slow for a 6

Get off the site. j/k

you should notice a big difference going from 2.73 to 3.73's and with a tbi and an overdrive trans it will be very livable on the streets and highway. I would say yes you'll beat him, tough to say for sure since I've never ridden in a tiburon.

yes on mileage going down on the highway. Don't have any experience with any shift kits. Don't see it hurting matters only improving the shifting.

Re: 3:73 w/ trans

I just picked up my Camaro today after going from a 2.73 to a 3.73 rear end. It's a 305 TBI, for now. I honestly can't tell a huge difference, but I've been driving my other car, Saab 92X, which is a beast at this point. I was getting up to the 5K rpm range pretty quick on the way home though. I had them drain the tranny fluid and put in new, along with putting in my LS1 driveshaft while it was up in the air. The car is really smooth now. They also played with my adjustable rear shocks and the hook up to the ground is a lot better as well. I'm going to do the Corvette servo myself hopefully sometime this week. That alone is supposed to firm up the shifts.

Your car will feel "torquier" than it did before. On regular driving, it'll feel like its taking off much quicker. This is because your engine is revving higher for any given speed that you were at with the 2.73 before, and thus have more "power" to the wheels at any speed.

Your gas mileage will hurt on the highway for long cruises (but not by much). But your tranny will last longer because you are shifting quickly and not slipping.

Your chirp should turn into a nice squeal.

Top speed doesnt have anything to do with rear gear behind a 305 TBI.

If you ever reach your top speed (please dont attempt it on the roads), the car will be maxed out because it no longer has the power to push it. Changing to a 3.73 will only change how soon you get there, thats it.

Well it sounds like you know what you are talking about lol. Do you think that this is a good upgrade? No one has really said anything about the shift kit what do you think of them?
thanks

Re: 3:73 w/ trans

I have had a few fun passes around town since I got my car back yesterday. Lowering your top speed is no concern as stated above. I had thought of a shift kit before. But now with the car reaching higher rpm's quicker and I did have them change the tranny fluid, I feel no need for it. The car already shifts quicker and smoother than it ever has in the 7 years I've owned this 1991. This is also my third 1991 Camaro. I keep going back to them for fun cars. I still have the corvette servo to put in which is supposed to make the shifts even quicker. I wouldn't bother with the shift kit honestly.

Your top end is calculated by serveral things engine rpm, tranmission final gear ratio, rear end ratio, and tire diameter. Example 450hp 455 (mine) will do a calulated 130.44 mph with 5000 rpm, 1:1, 3.08, and 27 in dia tires. If i increse the rpm to 6000 I get a calculated 156.53 mph, if I get 3inch taller tires (30in/ same 5000 rpm) I get 144.94. Hourse power (really Torgue) just helps you run a crappy a gear you can run and still 60 ft a guy and have a higher top end with those gears. Rpm helps you run racier gears like 4:11 etc and still have some top end. If you want a free calculator try virtual engine calculator. you can play with it and see what I mean. Top end is only good for gas milage and that rare M5 race on your way to VIR. Changeing tire hight is a old ghetto way of changing gear ratios I was told while in San Antonio.
