Weird kickdown problem with 700R4.

I've noticed as of late that when I'm on the interstate cruising at about 70 and put the pedal to the floor, the tranny shifts down to second and stays there. It will not shift out of second. The revs peg at 6500. I know the tranny is in gear because if I let off the gas the motor will slow the car down. If I let up to about 2/3 of full throttle then the tranny will go back into third and start pulling strong again. It does the same thing with the shifter in D and OD. Sometimes the tranny will rapidly shift between 2nd and 3rd when I put the pedal to the floor as if its hunting for a gear. The tranny does not do this when I take off from a start, although it will not manually shift into third at full throttle for some reason. I heard this is a common problem with the 700. Could these two be related, and what is going on. Its beginning to worry me.
Oh yeah, the TV cable has been adjusted properly and has been checked to make sure that it still is prperly adjusted.

YES!!!!! If I only go to 1/2 to 2/3 throttle the tranny will shift fine. When it inappropriately downshifts to second on the interstate I can lift the pedal back up to 2/3 throttle and it will shift to third. But if I go back to full throttle then it will slam back to second again. Thanks for the help.

You could have a couple of problems here. Assuming that at one time it worked ok, the oil that applys 3rd gear might not might not have enough oil to overcome the checkball capsule in the input drum. The checkball in the capsule (due to centrifugal force) will not seat itself if there is not enough volume of oil to push the ball on its seat when 3rd gear is trying to come on. This lack of enough oil is usually due to crossleaks that come with time. To fix this the easy way would be to install the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit along with the .471 or .500 main boost valve. This kit will TRIPLE the volume of oil to 3rd gear, and it will address other problems as well. The kit sells for $78.00, the .471 or .500 main boost valve $10.00, and if you manually shift the transmission then add the .296 intermediate/reverse boost valve $15.00.
This Should Help!!!

Ha, funny you should mention it. I had it on my previous tranny that blew out and forgot to remove it from my sig. The shop I had rebuild the tranny was supposed to put a transgo in there but I found out a few months later when I started getting unwanted shifts to overdrive that it wasn't the transgo. Boy was I pissed. They got a piece of my mind.

This is, unfortunately not an uncommon problem. Often when a 'Shift Kit' is requested, the shop will charge more and then do a few 'tricks' to make it shift harder. Unfortunately this is NOT what a true Shift Kit is all about. You might consider sueing them though. I am sure that they laughed about it when you left.

I've been having the same problems. After much advise from TransFixLeo, I still have not been able to find a reputable shop to do the work for a decent price without wanting to @ssrape me and trying to fix something thats not broken.

I need to get mine fixed. Funny thing is...it only started doing this after a complete overhaul. I had it done at the trans shop I used to work at. The guys there were a little "old school" and I don't think they know a whole lot about anything newer than a T350.

Other than that, I have a real solid trans. It has firm shifts and the stall is right (I ordered the converter. Its a Dacco.)

So you guys are saying its in the valve body and not the governor?

Also, I have not WOT 4th gear like I used to???
