How strong is a Probuilt tranny???

I'm looking for an automatic with overdrive but it needs to be strong. It will be backing a 427 twin turboed small block. I heard Probuilt was the best so I'll probably go with a tranny from them. Just wanted to know everyone's recommendations. Thanks.

His best is said to only hold around 650. A TT 427 is should be pumping awhole lot more. I think you might be in for a TH400 or powerglide

No no no, lol. This car will be driven (maybe even daily! )
, not just a racer. I want overdrive. It might not be a 427 though. It's definitely going to be an aluminum small block that's twin turboed. What's the strongest auto with OD?

Either a 4L80E or a built turbo 400 with a 34 element sprag and a gear vendors overdrive unit. If you can afford an aluminum big block I'm sure you can afford the gear vendors unit.

You want a 300M steel input shaft and a billet drive hub for the T400 behind the twin turbo small block.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I'll definitely be doing lots of research and calculations to make sure the tranny is beefed up.

Check out Yank Performance and look at their 4L70 transmission. It is basically a seriously worked TH2004R transmission - like out of a Grand National. Even a plain TH2004R is a better transmission when compared to a comperably built TH700R4 - especially when you look at the gear ratios in each box. The TH2004R, or Yank's '4L70', is a 4spd OD transmission and you can option the Yank 4L70 to handle up to 850 ft-lbs . I know they make a kit for LS1 cars but I am sure they can put something together for a regular small block chev as well if you contact them....

If not, they also sell a stout TH400 that can be built to handle over 1000 ft-lbs !!!

I personally know a guy that runs a 4L70 kit in his LS1 car and it turns easy 10 second ETs.........

Good Luck...

Since torque is what breaks things, I'd be more inclinded to get a tranny from someone who says "it can handle XX ft*lb of torque" instead of saying "it can handle YY hp".

How about a lenco tranny these trannys can handle some serious power but be prepared to spend some money for it. When my next motor is built a 455 sbc all aluminum with twin turbos i will need a tranny that can handle somewhere near 1,700 hp that will survive street duty i know im nuts but why not you only live once later Dave.

I am currently running an all magnesium 501 ci small block that pumps out 2100HP , behind it is a custom 700R4 with a Beralcast case and all billet Beryllium internals, so far the stock 7.5 rear is holding up well.

Umm...just curious if this is an F-body. If so, how are your plans for Twin Turbos going to happen?

Yes, this will be for a 91 Firebird. Right now, I'm planning/blue printing everything that needs to be done. I'm almost complete in getting the insides. The engine will take a little more time because of college. The new engine will be twin turboed but I doubt that's gonna be anytime soon. I'm starting with the frame and suspension work first then moving on to the brakes. Engine will happen later. I will start taking pictures to document all of my work. I have a vision of what the car can and will be. Just need to get there.
