I am looking into the clutch tamer

Grant is a member here and we've been emailing. They don't yet have a 3rd gen specific setup but are working on a 3-4th gen combo.

If anyone has used it please let me know how you set it up and how it performs. Also, isn't the 3rd and 4th gem pedal assembly basically the same? I thought I remembered someone saying a 4th will fir a 3rd so the basic kit should be very similar.

I already have one. It's called MY LEFT FOOT. Any time I want to burn up a clutch disc, I have that power right their in my shoe.

I seem to remember that guy... isn't that the screen door damper d00d?

 

Lol, you always crack me up Sofa. If I could operate my clutch better, I would. The problem for me is riding right in the friction point. It's difficult for me with stock seats letting my butt move back as the car moves forward. The friction zone as far as pedal movement can't be more than a 1/4 inch.

Anyway, yes it's the door closer-looking device. Actually, they are hydraulic shock absorbers which are adjustable. Most door closers are pneumatic. But the idea is the same, it releases freely to an adjustable point then moves very slowly through the friction zone. Looks like it would be very reliable as far as consistent clutch engagement from run to run. However, it seems it would definitely wear more than a quick engagement.

$10 says you can't get my car out of a parking lot without stalling the engine or smelling clutch.

 

You don't use a screen door damper on the clutch linkage to get out of a parking lot "consistent"ly. (well... maybe that depends on the parking lot...)

Regardless, I'd be inclined to take the bet.

 

Ok I get it, you don't like the idea. I appreciate your opinion as I have always regarded it highly. Needless to say, if I did have better driving methods I would employ them.

If anyone has actually used this device (which does embarrassingly resemble a screen door damper) please let me know your experience. I specifically am interested in mounting methods.

Last year's NMRA Coyote Stock season champ Jacob Lamb uses a screen door damper, as do most of the other CS competitors. At one point last year the rules were amended to outlaw the damper, but there was a mutiny because the guys did not want to go back to pulling the transmission every 3-4 passes for clutch maintenance. The next day there was an emergency meeting and the rules were changed to specifically allow the ClutchTamer. At the recent event in PA, Jacob took home $6200.

There's also Dan Ryntz that runs in Factory Stock class. He ran a state of the art automatic last year, but for this year he switched to manual trans and a screen door damper. So far this year he has won 3 out of 4 events, and was runner up in the only event he did not win. Last two events alone he took home a total of $9700.

Both Coyote Stock and Factory Stock are very competitive classes that run on a .400 pro tree and have very similar rules with regards to transmissions/converters/clutches. The guys running in NMCA's Chevrolet Performance Stock have started using the screen door damper as well. If they were not consistent, these guys would not be using them.

Thanks. I finally looked over your thread on the 69. The slide box bracket appears solid. That is basically what I am planning to do with mine. Let me know how it works out. I'll do the same.

 

How long did it take for your Clutch Tamer to come in? I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping it will arrive any day now. There is a test and tune day this weekend so if all goes well, I am planning to test it and report back on the results. Regardless, I will let you know when I do.

I don't remember exactly how long it took to get it, but I think it was just over a week. I have tried mine and it did improve my 60 foot times. I'm not an experienced drag racer, so I'm still trying to figure out the whole car. When I get some more experience I'm sure that I'll be able to get it tuned better.

 

I'd take that bet... You'd be smelling tire smoke and I'd be $10 richer!

On a side note, I will have to look into that clutch tamer. It looks pretty interesting!

 

Thanks for the info. Yeah Grant is out of the cylinders right now so I've been waiting for a couple of weeks. I'm anxious to try it out since improving my 60's is the main reason for trying it. Now, I am running 1.70's-80's and hoping to do better. Of course with a stock stiff IROC suspension, it may not get great.

Lol, I hear ya. I have a few hundred passes probably and only 50-60 with the current setup. Before, ~3000 and driving it out of the hole was about as good as it got. Now with the RXT clutch and Hoosier Quick Time bias tires I can launch at ~4000 and spin a little. But still it should 60 a lot better for a 7.50et.

 

I have 15 to 20 passes, so you are far ahead of me. I'm still learning how to do the burnout correctly. Reaction times are over a second most of the time because I'm concentrating on getting the car off the line. It's a 4 speed so I'm pretty busy when the lights start coming down.

You bring up the burnout and that's something I have been wondering about. Does the clutch tamer affect doing a burnout? My car runs slicks at the track and I get them wet and then pull out and burn out in second gear for a couple seconds. I was hoping the CT doesn't keep me from shocking the tires when I want to. Seems like I could just press the clutch in far enough to get it in gear (rather than going all the way to the floor) and pop it from there. ???

 

I didn't have any problems doing 2nd gear burnouts.
