700 R4 question

At 75 mph should your rpm be topped out in 4th gear? I had the transmission rebuilt, not sure. I mean it will do 80 etc.but it's pushin it.
And it will stay high rpm the whole time?
Is there a way to turn the over drive off?
Ive read that turning the overdrive off, allows the car to lower its gear.
It stayed 4.9k RPM the whole time on a 8 hour trip. It has always driven like this , it seems fine. I was just wondering if thats normal?

I'm the same age as the car so I'm not sure if this is how it was back then or not.

Your tach is obviously wrong...

Re: 700 R4 question

This thread should be on a best of list. You know what time it is when you drive at 5,000RPM for 8hrs? It'd be time for a new car.

Here is a thread on the tachometer problem (common) and how to fix it:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...meter-fix.html

Going by a seat-of-the-pants guess, at 80 MPH the engine RPM should be in the low 2 K RPM range. That is if the stock rear gears and not a higher ratio gear set is in place.

Note that overdrive is another gear in the transmission. To 'turn off' overdrive move the shifter from the OD position to the D position.

Torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup is different then overdrive. Can unlock the TCC by slightly depressing the brake pedal. At cruising speeds the tach should bump up a bit as the torque converter is now slipping.

RBob.

man for all we know maybe someone swapped in a 6.50 gear for the dirt track. Does this thing have a roll cage by chance?

This is what I was thinking also. I had the same issue on my 91. Followed the guide to fix it and works fine. But I would verify first if the engine rpm is reading high or not.
