Wiper/Turn signal arm Problem
Wiper/Turn signal arm Problem
My idiot brother disided to borow my car
. When he gave it back the turn signal arm was broken off.
After a quick a$$ kickin' by mayself. I addressed how to fix the problem, at first i thought it was simple. Replace the arm, but half of the other arm is broken off inside the hole the new one is suposed to go into. Please help me. I have tried every thing I know how to do.

To disassemble that piece, you gotta take apart the entire steering column assembly.
Yeah, really for true.
For true.
Down the steering tube shaft is the wire harness. You'll feel a connection to it. Ya separate it there & it snake out from inside out.
For real.
Tilt column?
Plan on rebuilding the entire column new bearings & new ignition rack. It's a $31 kit (rack kit includes bearings).
Signal switch is about $45-60 I'll bet.
You need a special tool, actually three.
Wheel puller.
Star wheel remover
Then the four way flasher switch puller on side.
Rest is just screwdrivers.
Not a nice thing to do to ya...
Labor is about 2-3 hours.
IN A WAY you're lucky..
Why?
That ignition rack, BREAKS real easy, then you are stranded can't turn ignition switch to start car, except a real awkward way....
Like I said ya kinda lucky....

DON'T LAUGH AT THIS THOUGHT
Find another steering column & swap in.......
Especially IF you don't have a tilt column.
Hope that thought helps
ONLY F Body columns swap
YET
YET
Parts interchange (turn signal parts-double check that point)
Sorry to tell ya but is truth.
Not a nice thing to have done at all.
BEST WAY...
GO to GM dealer & ask them to provide an exploded diagram print out of the column along with parts list. Give the guy a brew for his help.
See what you are up against.
I've done 10 column rebuilds.
Pain in the ***. Have to do several more, too. 5 cars.

yeah swapping a column is a whole lot easier and less painful than rebuilding one...just make sure you get a column out of a car without vats or airbag...less hassles. of course if you rebuild it you dont have to worry about some junkyard POS breaking 10 minutes after you put it in
I took the easy way out
I got hold of a good wiring diagram and did up the turn signels, wipers and brights to switches under the dash.
Ive got the turn signels on a duel swith, click left to go left and right to go right. The wipers are also on a dual switch one way for low one for high. Teh bright are on an on off switch (and yes the indicater works).
What do you think of the set up. Personaly i like it, it gives it an individual touch.
PS my grand father runs an inspection station and I checked with him before i did it to make sure it would pass inspection and it passed no prob.

When I fixed my tilt stearing I had to deal with that turn signal lever.
It was a pain and it might be easier to just swap in a whole new colum. But if you do take it apart,I hope your good at putting things back together.
I did some custom work on mine, super glued the turn signal so it did not move back n fourth for the brights anymore. I hate having the brights up there so I removed it and put an old stomper switch on the floor.
I can use my brights more often as its easier to just stomp on the switch with my left foot then taking my hand off the wheel and do it.
I got a stick so I only got 1 hand th stear anyways.

You can either have two switchs or have and OFO switch. Under the steering colum there are two wire harnesses. you need to first ahve power to the switch wire the purple switch to one side and i will have to check on the other color. You can just splice it in so you dont have to cut any wires. I put the wiper switch underneath the steering wheel, you can put it any where thats conveniant. I'll get back to you on the other color wire, i think its green but im not sure.
there are two wiring harneses a longer one on the righ side and a smaller one on the left. You want the one on the left, the purple wire is the high wiper and the green wire is the low, the other wires control the sprayer and the mist and other stuff. If you want to check you self befor you do any sort of cutting just apply power to the wire and se what comes on.
dipendiing on the type of switch you have it should look like this.

You can then wire the swith any where you want in you car. If you have delay this will bypass it, bu if not then your fine.
I put my switch right over the light ****, you can get almost any size switch under the dash pad with no problem.
Let me know how it goes.
