145mph speedometer in V6?
145mph speedometer in V6?
I tried a search and I couldn't find any "for sure" results. So here it goes:
I want to upgrade my 1992 (electronically driven) 110mph speedometer to a 145mph (electronically driven) speedometer from a Z28, here's my question, can I change out the speedometer only or do I need to swap the whole guage cluster? if I have to swap the whole guage cluster, what do I have to do to get my (new) tachometer to read correctly?
Thanks for your help!

If you ever seen the other side of a buck twenty then I think it would be a worthy mod. But I doubt it
Could save that money for a set of headers or something.
In answer to your question... yes it would work. The clusters all operate on the same voltage signal.

Yes and no.
What's the diff?
On the V-8 gauuge set up, you'll see oil pressure reading to ONLY 60 lbs.
That's for V-8 POWERED ONLY.
Our V-6 rides have oil pressure readings to the number 80 and the matching sensors.
The speedo, swapping in & out, shouldn't be a dramatic difference as they are same "frame" (plastic housing & circuit board).
The TACHS, flip over gauge packages & you'll see a "6" on one tach circuit board & a "8" on the other.
Solution, you should be able to just swap the speedo heads from one to another.
Swap/replace the 145 speedo head to the V-6 gauge package & IT SHOULD BE FINE.
But don't quote me, as I've never experimented with the electric drive speedo items.
My 1985 Firebird has mechanical speedo. I have a V-8 gauge set that I converted to V-6 by swapping tach circuit boards & swapping the V-6 oil pressure
I plan on swapping in a 160 speedo head from a 70's Firebird or a spare Corvette one (from the 70's).
For my mission, my problem is making the face numbers for reading that high. Computer graphics here I come!
My Firebird going 160MPH?????
I'd offer it for that stunt only if they dropped my car on a few stupid turban heads overseas.
Can you say "going out in style!"

Yeah, you can't separate just the speedo from a 90-92 dash. You'd need the whole thing and the oil pressure gauge is wrong just like Karl said, and the tach probably won't work right....still not sure about that one..

Anyways, I'm planning to upgrade to a turbo 3.8 out of a TTA this summer, so the speedo will be put to good use!
so it sounds like I have to buy the guage cluster, and then swap my v6 tach and oil pressure guages into it....correct?

That theory worked correct for my 1985 gauge cluster.
Yours could still be different solution, too.
You're upset about someones comment who owns a MINIVAN!
Tell the guy, next time, just walk that fast 'cause you ain't riding with me no more!
Next thing he'll say is the minivan has more room & you'll be figuring out that solution for him, too!!
I got it, hit the hatchback opening & boot him out!

...Actually, I don't care very much about what people say about my car, I do what I want with it, and I would like to have a 145mph speedometer, it's not really a big priority for me right now, I'm just planning ahead so I can watch for a good deal....and besides, If it is possible there is no reason why I shouldn't upgrade

Yeah atleast the tach...4 cyl to v-6 to v-8 tach setting are all different...When I installed my new tach in my Z28 it was set on 4 cyl. It said I was shifting at 10,500 RPMs...heh heh
