Gear question.... (V6 board)

to those who know the V6's...
what would be the best and highest gears to put in my '88 camaro.
3.42 automatic open diff.
that's the stock gearing.
gas mileage doesn't matter, as the mileage kicks *** already..
4.10 seems to be the word around here, but what about 4.56's?
remember peak hp is @ 4900 and peak torque is @ 3900.
quite a bit higher than the TPI's. and it seems that the TPI boys don't go over 3.73's
so i'm thinking the higher gears would help a 2.8 get up and go...

help me decide guys and gals....

I have 3.23;s and I just ordered 3.73's , so the gas mileage isnt affected to much. This should give a good bump in performance........I bet 4.10's are better though if you dont mind getting worse gas mileage. I cross the 1/4 mile marker turning 4000 RPMS, so I need more gear since the peak is around 5000 rpm.

So what I;m saying is GET 4.10's! (if you dont mind bad gas mileage....)

hey, with a V6, the mileage is already good, you can't lose too much. it's looks like a v8, so why not get v8 mileage?
what about 4.56's?

4.10? 4.56?? Damn those gears seem way too low to me! You'll be running out of gear quick with an automatic tranny..

tom is right. i have heard of a guy that got the 4.10's in a 1996 camaro v6 (3.8L) and he cant go over 80 mph because of the rev limiter kicking in (the speedo gets thrown off that much) cause his rpms are that high. i would say no higher than 3.73. i have 3.23 in my 94 camaro and it already packs a pretty good punch launchwise.

See a long time ago there used to be a guy on this board that had 4.10's in his 86 bird. His chip took off the rev limiter and he had 235 60 R15's and loved the change... He said it would go and was glad he went 4.10's over 3.73 cause it was a more drastic change. I plan to run 4.10's in my 86 camaro with a locker.... Seee you also have to consider tire diameter in this...

The rev limiter appeared on the 4th generation f-bodies. The computer uses it as a speed limiter. Our cars are "supposed to" have a speed limiter at 112, but my highest speed is 137- that might be due to either the ADS superchip, or that I lucked out and didn't get a speed limiter.
