vaps orange wire from steering column cut to short
Ok so i found a video on youtube of how to disable vats using resistors. I did exactly what he said and it didnt work. The orange wire coming out from the steering column with two smaller white wires inside it got cut to short for me to splice them back together. Its cut to short from the plug and the guy who was trying to fix the problem cut the plug and tried to splice them together but the car still wont turn over. I was having the VATS problem before and was trying to bypass obviously i f!@#ed it up lol. BTW its a 1989 Camaro RS 305 TPI with screwed up VATS. ANY help would be appreciated I really dont wanna take this thing to the dealership and give them my wallet.

all you have to do to bypass it is take those 2 wires that are coming from the passanger side and wire one side of the correct resistor to one wire and the other side of the resistor to the other wire.
this only bypasses the column part of the VATS system, so if youre VATS module has stopped working, this wont fix it.

i tried that and my multimeter gave me the number i tried to use the resistors i bought from radio shack. I dont know if i got the resistors on there wrong or if i got a dud multi meter but i hooked them up like that and it still wouldnt crank. I had a friend use butt conectors to wire the wires back together and just took the plug out of the middle and it cranked up. I know i havent fixed my VATS problem but im hoping i can by a new car from a locksmith and he can set the resistance the same on it and it will fix it. If anybody near augusta ga knows how to bypass id love to pay you to fix it

it could be a bad VATS module, if thats the case no amount of resistors is gonna fix it, only replacing the VATS module or bying a VATS bypass module will get the car running

yah im gonna have to buy a vats bypass module eventually also it runs perfect shifts great engine sounds great brand new fuel pump and fuel sending unit put in 2 days ago. Took it for a test drive and 45 mins later it just shut off while i was driving it. Of course because of vats i couldnt crank it for a while but when vats finally recognized my key it cranked up with no issues whatsoever and hasnt cut off again since. any ideas?

could be the contacts in the ignition switch, or VATS module going bad, or something as simple as a loose connection. if the VATS module stops sending the fuel and spark enable signal to the ecm for whatever reason, its stops working.. no spark and no fuel = no run.

thats what i thought but from what i found on these forums the vats checks the key only once and thats when you crank the car. So i dont think that would be it. I'll make sure i post back after i get a new key made tue and let you know if ive had any more problems maybe i read it wrong about checking it once.I'm having a locksmith make a new vats key and make it read the same resistance $30 is cheaper than $85 for a new key from chevy

I found it, after an hour under the dash with a flashlight, car runs now.
