In college my roomate had a 92 mustang coupe longtubes, 3.55 tremac, flows, cobra intake, tuning etc. Very quick. I had a black 88 rs with iroc wheels, no cat, no egr, k and n filter, free mods, 5 speed etc . Best pass I could get was mid 15's he ran 13.0's. He always made fun of me. One night we were going back to home town and there was a 30 mile stretch of back roads. We ran it up 130 +He pulled on me from a stop hard but above 80 I was right on him. He had cobra brakes subframes, etc also. In curves I could accelerate on him. I know it wasnt smart but I got a new respect for the camaro chassis. Here was the line .....when we stopped after 30 miles he said WHAT THE ----

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
Wish I'd seen this a while ago...
"Is that thing EVER going to be done?"... Doing everything at the same time. Hope to be done next year, so yes, it will be done.
"Are you ever going to stop working on it?"... Nope. It's going on 24 years old. Which is pretty old for a car nowadays. You try getting old and find out you need work done occasionally if you weren't in good shape for a long time.
"Why do you have to spend so much money on it?"... Because it's mine and I can. And because I don't have anything better to spend it on at the moment. Plus, it keeps me from wasting my money somewhere else.
"You know, with all the money you spent on that thing, you could have bought and paid for a new car by now."... Not quite. And I bought my car knowing it was a project to get me out of the house away from my crazy family.
"You've spent all of that money on your car and it STILL doesn't run right." Yeah, well, at least mine starts and goes (when not in a few hundred pieces
). AND, it may not quite run right, but it STILL gets DOUBLE the gas mileage of your 6-year newer car with 2 less cylinders AND the other car. When my mother had the 93 Acclaim she traded in last year after it sat for years and got 12 MPG and my father still had the 07 Grand Prix he traded in last December that got, at best, 29 MPG (my V6 Bird got 31 MPG running rich).
"Doesn't this thing have A/C?"... Didn't work when I bought the car. Kind of pointless with side windows AND T-tops. So I completed ripping the A/C system out earlier this year with the installation of an A/C delete blower box.
Most common with the mom in the car... "Can't you put the windows up some?" Nope. Need the air. I have (had, now) an exhaust leak I'd rather not choke on (even though I'd love to choke YOU on it).
"You realize the Check Engine light is on?" Yes. It's big and yellow. I know it's on. And when I get home, if I don't already know why it's on, I'll find out.
I've gotten the "Whoa! Nice car!" a few times from people who don't know any better. My paint sucks, what's left of it, among other things. I just say, "Thanks, but she's only a WIP. She'll be better someday."
And then the kicker... I was getting some money out of the ATM (don't have a card and don't carry much cash) and this hippie-like guy comes walking by with his bicycle. My car was cold and a little rich (I believe it was before I replaced the MAF sensor for the last time). He says something along the lines of, "You know, the timing on that thing is WAY too far advanced. Maybe if you'd retard it to where it's supposed to be, the rest of the world wouldn't choke on your exhaust." Me: "It's stock, right where it's supposed to be." "Still too far advanced. Take it to a shop where it'll be done right." Me: "I've been to school for this sort of thing, and I've been setting my own ignition timing for years. It's set at the factory 10* BTDC. The computer does the rest." We argued about the timing setting for another minute and I drove off, letting him choke some more on my slightly too rich (due to MAF reading high) exhaust.
I had a guy pull up to me in a Ranger and ask to TRADE (when I was living in Ohio). I said that I'd think about it, took his number, and drove off. This was after a little speed contest (that I would have won had the engine been running with the right fuel injectors... as it was we tied. :edit: Now that I think about it, IIRC, I still pulled on him slightly).
I've also had a couple people ask me if I had a V8... Yeah, with 2 cylinders chopped off.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
one time i was sitting at a stop light and the guy next to me about my age (19) made eye contact with me and was checkin out my car. he says "Dude, your car gives me a boner." lol i just laughed and said thanks. few weeks later i saw him again and he said "your car still gives me a boner" lol

Before my Z got totaled I would always get "how fast does it go?!?" to which I would reply "85"... people would be like *whoa*... then you could see the gears turning, then they say "85?!?". "yep, that's what the speedo always says, and that's what I'll tell the police"
I'm curious if there will be any difference in the goofy questions when I drive the GTA

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
Living in europe I do not get many mul-let jokes.
Most common questions are:
Q: "how much do you pay for gas?"
A: "same as you, it's just gone a bit faster"
Q: "does it have a 6 cylinder?"
A: "nope, guess again"
Q: "That car has a V8, right? How much displacement? 3,5 liters?"
A: "nope, for 3,5 liters 6 cylinders would have suffised"
Q: "Tax must be inaffordable for that thing!" (not really a question but I'll hope you let that pass"
A: "yep, but spare parts are drop dead cheap"
Q: "That's huge!"
A: *point at trunk*
As you gather, I'm not a very talkative person.
Most comments, responses and questions are positive however and I picked up some nice conversations. Most of the envious passers by just continue passing by without asking or talking, their looks giving away a lot more then they'd be comfortable with.
As said, europe is a bit different.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
I used to have a fast, loud 84 and people would ask "What's in that thing?!" It had a carbed 383 w/ all Hooker exhaust. A chick once jumped in it and said she wouldn't leave til she drove it. I let her stay in it for a while but of course she didn't drive it (true story & if I told you more you wouldn't believe me)..
My 90 didn't look that hot and one day when I had it out some jerk asked me "Dude, you just leave a Van Halen concert? Where's yer ******?!"
When my 92 is done I'm sure I'll get some odd questions- I live in NC now and there are very few 3rd gen Firebirds.. Everyone has stock Mustangs w/ flowmaster exhaust. Ick.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
Depending on the generation. If its other kids my age the questions always "why didn't you get a honda?" And then I have to show them that my v8 maro is so much better than thos PoS'. If its older people they tend to ask me either "is it a v8?" Or "did your parents buy it for you?" Or something along the lines of "how do you afford that?"

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?
I get plenty of compliments and looks around here. Mostly from older guys. One just recently referred to it as a 'slick little poncho'
I get asked about my 'Camaro' quite often. Had a guy that worked at the local parts house ask me what year Corvette it is. To which I replied I couldn't remember lol. I guess the Z06 wheels through him a little.
All my friends drive late model V8 cars like Charger Daytona and Mustang GT so when they ask what size engine and I tell them 400 cubic inches they don't really understand. So then I say 6.6L and their eyes get wide lol. I guess to them 5.7L is big and the 6.2L LS3 is huge.
Also some people ask about my mileage. "What you get, about 13-14mpg?" On the hwy I can get up to 20
No one ever wants to race me though
cant figure that one out lol

All my friends drive late model V8 cars like Charger Daytona and Mustang GT so when they ask what size engine and I tell them 400 cubic inches they don't really understand. So then I say 6.6L and their eyes get wide lol. I guess to them 5.7L is big and the 6.2L LS3 is huge.
Also some people ask about my mileage. "What you get, about 13-14mpg?" On the hwy I can get up to 20

No one ever wants to race me though
cant figure that one out lol

"Does the a/c work?" Everyone asks me this, usually people with older cars. Yes it does.
Do I ever run it? No.
"Why would you buy that thing?"
"You do realize you'll never get back all the money you're putting in?" yes bitches, I know! It's my car, my money!
