Wow! That's a beautiful car! Must be because newer cars all look simular. The Third gens look unique now that they are classic and it's rare to see clean versions.

so true, all the new cars look the same, very few of them stand out, but there is no other car in existence that looks much like a 3rd gen camaro imo. New cars are far too contemporary looking for my taste...mundane, etc.

The Dodge Daytona of the 80s was trying really hard to look like a camaro....

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?

The Daytona almost ran like one as well, even with the turbo 4... Would have been more fun if it was RWD. Still hate the dash setup, though, even though those seats were probably the most comfortable I've sat in yet (had a 93 3.0 5-speed for a while, last year of production). Things I hated about that car were the rust spots on the hood, the heads needed work (still have the head set for it and can't get rid of it to save my life!), the fact that it cost me a couple hundred to pass inspection AFTER I put a fuel pump in it, and all of the r1cer crap my buddy did to it (first thing I did was tear off the fart can and give it to a buddy of his). And the cable-operated clutch could have been way better...

:edit: Still not sure who would have won in a drag, my Bird or his Daytona... Never going to find out, either... He sold the car after I gave it back to him... And the guy who bought it isn't around any more than he is anymore...

Lots of people seem surprised to find out that mines a 92, they were convinced it was some old 70s muscle car. A couple of times I've been asked about my 70s Trans Am, and I point out that its a 90s Camaro...

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?

When I do bother to listen to people I get some of these:

them: Want to trade?
me: For a 2010 Camaro or $20K cash
them: That car isn't worth that much
me: you asked

(from the shop I had do the ball-joints, and the shop that set up the rear end)
them: you know what you got?
me: you mean the 1LE? Yeah I know.
rear end shop guy: Is it real?
me: umm..what?

Plus I get alot of smiling faces and thumbs up when I cruise a parking lot or gas station. I just wish I could relax enough to park it outside and go in somewhere. I get so xxxx paranoid leaving it in a parking lot. The car has made it 21 years now and I don't want it getting messed up "on my watch".

Am I alone in this?

im with you, even when my car was a junky lol, i refuse to let that car outta my sight, i refuse to leave my windows down or my doors unlocked even iv im just inside someones house, it bugged me having my car at the muffler shop literally up the road, 5 minute walk from my house, i checked on it atleast 30 times, even after midnight i was up there, i wont be so bad when i get my windows tinted though...

Oh, definately. I once asked a colleague of mine to drive it out on the street so I could check clearance. He gave up after 10 minutes of maneuvering back and forth.

I turned the car and the my colleague drove it from the yard (giving me an indication how tall my airdam should be without scraping)

Clearance to the front, rear and mirrors isn't the biggest issue. The car has to move out through the blue' ish gate in the picture (only exit) and when driving through it I have about 1" of ground clearance left.

@ Mackjar, I agree. I don't quite see a problem either. But as 85 ZXX stated, it's a good theft deterrent.

He was just trying to be nice. Not everyone is a "Car Guy". I would just thank the guy and maybe say something like "Thank you, but its actually not a Mustang".

There is no need for name-calling. There is already enough hostility in the world.

Wasn't name calling, was accurate description, the bottom line is when you spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours building your car to be the dream car you've always wanted, only for it to be mistaken for its competition that it looks nothing like is as much an insult as a compliment. And even if you're not a car guy you should still know the difference between a camaro and a mustang by emblems if nothing else, lets face it, pretty much any performance car makes it a point to be easily identified visually, both by body style, and badges/ and outright having the name of the model on it, my car says camaro on the bumper strip in the back, it has a camaro badge on the nose, the z28s and IROC-Zs have further badging, the dash has camaro on it, or z28 IROC-Z badging, etc. It just isn't that hard to tell the difference, if someone compliments you and gets the make completely wrong, its a double edged sword that is as much insult as it is compliment.....
Corvettes say corvette on the back, and have two crossed flags for a nose emblem, mustangs have pony emblems, and say mustang on the back etc. Look at the current lineup of american performance cars, corvette, mustang, ford gt, dodge viper, corvette, charger, challenger, camaro etc. The only 2 in that list that look anything like each other is the corvette and viper, and they still are very different looking cars.
/end rant

I agree with Project3.4Camaro...I've had my firebird called a camaro, and even that bugs me, not as much as the mustang comment would have though. Really, there are many differences between birds and camaros, but even if you can't notice them...the bird on the tailight center panel, sail panels, and hood should be enough to make the difference quite obvious, plus the fender badges that clearly say FIREBIRD. People just don't pay attention to things.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?

I often get a very specific question on F-body meetings.
Somewhat related to my theft deterrent system

The question is: Why doesn´t yours have a regular airdam?

Today I finally filmed the reason as to why, which makes answering that question considerably easier.

Their main clue should be the pop up headlights....no camaro has em.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?

Yeah the pop ups are a dead giveaway, lol, but they can't even notice a big bird on the hood.

One of the oddest experiances I've had...Two guys in a prius sitting at the gas station: Guy 1-"That thing a V6 or a V8?" Me "V8"
Guy 2-"Dosn't matter even those V6s are gas guzzlers, you're really bad for the environment, you know?"

Didn't really know how to reply, I couldn't just say I don't care, but I had to have a comeback, which ended up being, "at least I don't look like a F** when I'm behind the wheel." Not the most upright repsonse, but hell, why be smug about your prius anyway? Damn eco freak stoners.

Re: Whats the first thing you get asked about your third gen?

Next time explain to the smug tard that even if you drive your v8 camaro till you die,t it will create less pollution than that made just from building a prius.

Should shut them up pretty fast. I would also peel out in front of them for good measure to rub in that not only is your v8 camaro better for the environment, its also a helluva lot more fun.

You could also ask how many chicks he picks up with his prius, and or ask him if the mangina costs extra.
I don't like smug people, especially ignorant ones that don't know wtf they're even talking about and think they are better just because they bought a hybrid.

Thats how I would respond anyway....

mostly when sombody says that to me. I just sum up facts.
like "
did you know that it costs so much polution creating a prius in the factorie that you could drive a hummer H1 for a 100 years and still havent polluted the earth as much as your prius.
you must be really proud driving a car that already left such a big mark on the enviroment without even driving it.
if you really wanted to help the enviroment you had bought 1 car, and drove it for the rest of your life instead of buying a new car every couple of years that you are gonna throw away because a newer car wil use even less gas.
but the fact is that it takes a lot of polution the build these new cars.
so the fact is you are not helping the enviroment at all.

* this is the moment you see them thinking.

you can keep jabbering on about the batteries and the material they us in it.
or the fact that toyota actually used old poluting engines they had laying on spare and put it in the hybride together with the electromotor so that it would be a greener car. yet its still an old poluting engine.

* now look at how there face is going even more down.

you end with, "and you call me a poluter, thats a bit hypocrit and short sighted don't you think ?

All good points. Although, I must say, I drive a V6 and even running like crap, it got better gas mileage than 2 newer cars sitting next to it in the driveway (93 Plymouth, 07 Grand Prix). Plus, it's 24 years old... Seriously doubt those Priuses are going to last that long. It's just a tree-hugging hippie fad that should fade away shortly once people start having to have those batteries changed for hundreds of dollars a pop.

/end rant
this, this exactly is what i thought....i watched him do acouple walk arounds of my car and the look in but still...i mean i dont have the chevrolet and bowtie sticker on the back on the back anymore but wow...

Still, just like the gas in our gas tanks, they eventually get depleted (takes a LONG time, but the hydrogen is made by the chemical breakdown of the fuel cell). And, in the case of fuel cells (as of current), they're VERY expensive to replace. Just like the batteries in a Prius and the Volt and what not. So, when someone buys one and the fuel cell/power cell/batteries get depleted, and they get the cost of replacement from a dealer, I'm sure many of them are like "Why did I buy this thing again? I should just go buy a new car now!" Especially because any number of them require a good deal of disassembly to change the fuel cell, and it can only be done by specially trained personnel (VERY high voltages in the case of fuel cells).

that and like alot of us are running into on these newer cars now, we dont have the tools or knowledge to be able to do alot of stuff or fix alot of stuff on these newer cars

Yeah, I don't expect it to happen anytime soon, but the world has a finite supply of fossil fuels, and either hydrogen fuel cells or even hydrogen internal combustion will probably replace fossil fuels, as atm they would be the most promising, possibly battery powered cars but I doubt it since I don't they will ever have good enough range and would be a pita, and hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe by far after all...

Oh, the stuff is basically the same... It's the 480 volts or whatever it is running to the fuel cell to provide the energy needed for the chemical reaction that needs to be carefully handled .

If only there was a way to cheaply split water and have cars run off of that... That would take care of the melting ice caps right there . But, then, of course, replacing the electrodes would be a killer (I would expect them to be something like palladium or something).
