Slow cranking when hot

When my car is hot it turns over real slow. The battery is new and also the cables. Is the starter/solenoid getting to hot? Should I install a heat shield? Replace the starter/solenoid? relocate the solenoid? The motor is a 350 TPI with a 5 speed.
Thanks for your help.

Most likely heat soaking into the starter. Heat shield would help, but an aftermarket starter would help even more.

I and several friends have bought the starter listed here:

http://www.tommyjohnsonjr.com/bs/

It's the same as most of the other starters listed in Summit and Jegs, and even their severe duty starter is cheaper than the regular starters at other places. It sounds really cool when cranking the engine over.

when you have bad heat soak you can do two things in my book. one is get a remote solenoid and mount in a cool spot. or by a high torq starter. My father had the heat soak problem in his 68 vet and he installed a torq starter it starts every time now. He use to have to wait or dump cold water on starter to speed the process IMO the torq starter is the way to go

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
An ignition cut-out switch will help a lot; it kills the spark so there is less load on the starter when hot. I have one on mine, and flip it off when cranking until the engine gets 'up to speed', then flip the switch on and it fires right up. It can also be considered an 'anti-theft' device and might help lower your insurance premiums to boot.
One other thing that may cause hard starting, is having the timing advanced to far.

I bought the standard model for $120, plus several dollars S&H. It has a nice medium/high-pitched whine, like a lot of the newer cars have, not a grunting noise like a regular older starter. Not sure about the torque or hp rating, but this model handles my 11.1 compression 355 with ease. It'd be easier to call them up to ask about applications and to order...
