which is louder

I owned a 3.5L Dodge Intrepid V6 before I bought my 305 Camaro, and I had a flowmaster 40 series delta flow on it, with all three stock cats on it. It sounded damn good for a V6 and pretty loud.
My friend had a 1994 3.4L V6 Camaro with no cat w/Flowmaster 80 series and 3" tips. Sounded LOUD as a bitch at low rpms and damn good at low speed crusing. When that bitch went by in the parking lot, you'd swear it was a V8. It would still get that high pitched sound at high rpms and sound like **** when he revved it, but hey it was a V6. My Dodge would get that same sound too when you revved the engine to like 6000+rpm's.

I'd definitely say the 80 series is the louder muffler, but beware, you're getting a ****LOAD of extra interior resonance (annoying sound) with the 80 series than the 40 series delta flow. Be sure you can stand the noise inside of an 80 series before you get it. I'm getting a high flow cat + 80 series and tips after I buy 4 new tires next week, I hope it sounds good.

The 40 series delta flow I had on my dodge kinda buzzed inside, but I knew it sounded great outside and I got used to it because it was minimal. I'm sure the deep throaty sound I'll be experiencing with the Camaro will be awesome inside and out, thats why I'm getting the high flow cat and 80 series. Even if it is annoying inside, I'll deal with it because it'll sound awesome outside

I love all noise from the exhaust. You should hear the inside noise with the cut-out

I don't have much interior noise at all, other than from the headers

40s are much louder than 80s, and the "delta flow" tech. is actually designed to specifically cut interior resonance, so that probably made a difference too. 80s are non-delta.

I have a 350 with stock manifolds to 3" Pipe, no cat, to a 80. There is a certain idle speed, about 800, that sounds like I have a sub in the back thats constantly putting out a 50Hz bass note. At 750 its not there, at 850 its not there, just some times in park this Holley likes to make its own idle speed and the sound comes from that. Wierd. I have all kinds of Roadkill plastered in the back also. I think it sounds good.

I disagree... Even according to the graphs on www.flowmastermufflers.com the 80 series is MUCH louder, and from what I've heard first hand.

My mechanic advised me to just buy a high-flow cat and y-pipe with tips and screw the muffler. The guy at the muffler shop advised me to just leave the stock cat and put on the 80 series or just cut the cat out completely (no emissions laws in FL) . Any opinions on what I should do?

I have a 40 series muffler on mine w/ the stock conv. and its LOUD. Of course mines a 350 so maybe a little difference, but not much. Id put the 80 series on and leave everything else.

Sorry Fredless I have to disagree. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying based on my observations I have a different opinion. What I'm basing this on is around here I've seen about a 50/50 mix of F-bodies either A. Running a crossflow 80 series or B. A single outlet setup with a 40 series. The single outlet ones have always been louder, or at least seem like it to me, and honestly have a better sound I think. This is pretty consistent for both 82-92 cars and LT1/LS1 cars. But again, thats just what I think. I also know mustang guys who run 40's and they're definately loud.

Do they run regular 40 series or Delta Flow? You would mount the 40 series transverse like the OE muffler, but wouldn't that look odd with just one outlet?

Yep, you mount it crosswise and just run a single outlet. It dosen't look "normal," but it sounds very good. You could do this with about any performance muffler you wanted to. Still though, borla seems to be about the loudest short of a SLP loudmouth or straight pipe.

Interior resonance was slightly noticeable, bud not bad at all with just the muffler.

Headers and a 3" exhaust made the resonance very noticeable

that is what i have, a 40 series race muffler mounted transversely. it doesnt look weird because it has a 3" hideaway tailpipe, so people really cant see it unless you are far away or under the car.
