Re: SPEEDOMETER

I am currently working on my 1991 Z28 with the same problem. I plan to work on it today. If I can help before someone else chimes in, I will. Good luck.

Re: SPEEDOMETER

You'll probably get more help in Tech/General Engine or another tech forum since it's a mechanical problem originating under the hood or somewhere in the wiring.

This is a forum more for interior trim, etc.

Re: SPEEDOMETER

I had this problem in my 88 GTA and it ended up being the gear on the tail shaft in the transmission. The clip that holds the gear in place broke and the gear would move when the car was in motion. To fix it you have to remove the tail of the transmission which is a pain.

The other problem could be the sensor motor itself it is easy to check though. Put a cordless drill on it and let her rip. If the speedo stays constant it is working fine if not there is the problem.

I would bet it is the gear on the tail shaft though. It took me the better part of four hours to fix mine in my driveway, but I was on my back with hand tools. You can get new gears and clips at any transmission repair shop for less than $20 combined.

Hope this helps.
