Turn Signal falling out of column

Hey im fairly new to the forums and I have a 1984 sport coupe thirdgen i found the camaro in a field which it sat in for 10 years and have put a rebuilt motor in it and plan to rebuild it, but the problem is when i push on the turn signals left or right the turn signal stock falls out sometimes, you can here the blinkers engage on both left and right but it still is dangerous. Any advice on if it is the stock or something in the column, and if you would take it to a shop because i don't have specialty tools. any advice is appreciated. At school so cant upload pics of the car sorry

Re: Turn Signal falling out of column

They just push in and should "snap in", did you try to give it a hard push in ?

Compare your signal stalk to one ebay make sure it looks the same or perhaps the snap in part broke off or is worn ... if broke - needs replacing.

New ones are like $42 +/-. Easy install - fish down the column and plug in. Replacing mine got the cruise control to start working again.
Was worth it.

Here's a video

Also you may have a bad switch (that the stalk fits into mounted inside the column).
The "seat" is only friction fit so it may be worn or broken.
Thats why the stalk pulls out.
Jersey is right saying to try and push the stalk into the switch firmly.

So how do you replace the switch if it's broken

Re: Turn Signal falling out of column

It would probably be easier for you to just get a different column since it only takes a wrench and a screw driver to replace the column. If you want to take the column apart there is a guide listed on this board somewhere. There are a couple of special tools needed to get that deep into the column though

Column disassembly. Not for the faint of heart (or those without the tools) - https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...-rebuilds.html

Re: Turn Signal falling out of column

As a project car it could be beneficial to do the column yourself so you can do other maintenance. You can use a rent a tool steering wheel puller and the directions ppl offered here to replace the broken switch. Then you can loctite the screws that make the steering wheel wobble, and wrap your blinker wiring where it gets pinched.
The job was new to me but it was actually ok.
I found a 2 or 3 part yt vid helpful-- something like gm column repair s10.
